The Demon That Betters the World

03:10
Researchers at an Aalto University laboratory, in collaboration with Stony Brook University and Tokyo University, have been successful with a famous thought experiment that has haunted the scientific world for more than 150 years: the Maxwell's demon. Experiments show how an electronic Maxwell's demon converts information to energy with the help of nano technology. This achievement could lead towards a more energy-efficient future.

How to Cool Down a Quantum Bit - the Quantum-Circuit Refrigerator

01:52
Article: http://dx.doi.org/10.1038/ncomms15189 Quantum Computing and Devices (QCD) Labs led by Mikko Möttönen has demonstrated a novel type of a refrigerator which directly cools down the functional degrees of freedom of quantum electric devices. This cooler is referred to as the quantum-circuit refrigerator (QCR). In their work just published in Nature Communications, the team experimentally demonstrates cooling of a linear superconducting resonator. Theoretically, the refrigeration principle works also for superconducting qubits which are typically slightly non-linear resonators. These kind of qubits are currently the most promising building blocks of the future large-scale quantum computer. Thus the QCR may be useful in the initialization of the quantum memory and other emerging quantum technological devices. Group contact: http://physics.aalto.fi/en/groups/qcd/ This project has received funding from the European Research Council (ERC) under the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 681311 (QUESS)

Tying Quantum Knots - Amherst College and Aalto University

01:42
In this video, we illustrate the structure of the first quantum knot ever tied in quantum matter. These results were reported in Nature Physics: http://www.nature.com/nphys/journal/vaop/ncurrent/full/nphys3624.html and produced by a collaboration of research teams headed by Prof. Mikko Möttönen (QCD Labs, Aalto University) and Prof. David Hall (Hall Labs, Amherst College). The knots are tied in a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) that is an atomic gas with superfluid properties. The created structure realizes the celebrated Hopf fibration for the first time in the context of quantum physics and quantum mechanics. This type of knot formed in a quantum gas is also referred to as a knot soliton.

Aurora Borealis - Metsähovi Radio Observatory all-sky camera time-lapse 2015-03-17

01:46
Aalto University Metsähovi Radio Observatory operates an all-sky camera for monitoring weather conditions. The camera assists astronomers observing with the Metsähovi 13,7-meter radio telescope to quickly form an awareness of the local cloudiness conditions. This video is a time-lapse of aurorae on the skies above the observatory captured between 2015-03-17 17:00 - 2015-03-18 03:31 UTC. The flashes of while light on the dome are from the lamps of Metsähovi personnell who were outside observing the aurorae and taking pictures. The aurorae were observed across the Northern hemisphere, including all of Finland. The original images were captured using on average a 23 second exposure time and since the frame rate of the resulting time-lapse video is 15 frames per second, the real-time events experience a speed-up by a factor of 345.
