Not only is it great to use in conjunction with other rendering passes but it also looks pretty great by itself and can often be used to represent a model’s wireframe. Rendering ambient occlusion is a vital technique to master because it can serve many different purposes. Whatever you decide to use it for, you’ll learn step-by-step the different methods for setting up an AO pass in this article. If you want to learn more about Ambient Occlusion and how it works be sure to check out Understanding Ambient Occlusion. Rendering AO with a Shader As with most other 3D applications you can setup an ambient occlusion pass through a shader, so let’s walk through that method first as it’s probably the easiest of the two. The first thing you’ll need to do is open up the Material Editor in 3ds Max. So go up to Rendering Material Editor Compact Material Editor.mental_ray_1 This ambient occlusion is going to be applied as a map to a new material. So select one of the default materials and scroll down to the Basic Parameters. For this you can plug it in to the Self-Illumination color. Now, you could map it to the diffuse color but mapping it to the Self-Illumination ensures it receives no direct illumination. Go ahead and check the Color box and select the box next to the Self-Illumination color. This will open up the Material Browser. #tutomator#learnanimationvfx

Add Divisions is useful when you need to add detail to an existing polygon mesh in either a global or localized manner. Polygon faces can be divided into three-sided (triangles) or four-sided (quadrangles) faces. Edges can be subdivided so that the number of sides on a face is increased. Select Edit Mesh Add Divisions to set the Add Divisions Options. BevelCreates beveled polygons along the currently selected edges or faces. See Bevel command and Bevel polygon edges and faces. Select Edit Mesh Bevel to set the Bevel Options. Bridge Constructs a bridging polygon mesh (additional faces) between selected pairs of border edges on an existing polygon mesh. The resulting bridging polygon mesh is combined with the original polygon mesh and the edges are merged. See Bridge Command and Bridge between border edges. Select Edit Mesh Bridge to set the Bridge Options. Collapse Collapses edges on a component by component basis and then merges the associated vertices for each collapsed edge separately. Collapse also works on faces, but produces results that are more predictable when using edges. If you wish to collapse and merge a selection of faces you should first select Edit Mesh Merge to Center. Connect When vertices and/or edges are selected, Connect connects them via edges. Vertices are connected directly to connecting edges, while edges are connected at their midpoint. Select Edit Mesh Connect to set the Connect Components Options. Detach When vertices are selected, Detach separates any selected vertex that is shared by multiple faces into multiple vertices depending on the number of faces the vertex shares. The edges of the faces associated with the vertex also become unshared as a result. When faces are selected, Detach separates the face selection along its perimeter edges. When edges are selected, Detach separates the selected edges into two overlapping edges. If you perform a Detach operation over a path of edges, the vertices along that path are also separated along that path. The vertices at the ends of each selection remain attached to both of the new edges or edge paths. If both vertices and edges are selected, Detach defaults to the same behavior as when only vertices are selected Pulls new polygons out from existing faces, edges, or vertices, with options to transform and reshape the new polygons as they are pulled out from the selected originals. See Extrude command. Select Edit Mesh Extrude to set the Extrude Options. Merges selected edges and vertices that are within a specified threshold distance of each other. For example, two selected edges will be merged into one shared edge. Select Edit Mesh Merge to set the Merge Components Options. Merge to Center Merges the selected vertices so they become shared, and any associated faces and edges are also merged. The resulting shared vertex is positioned at the center of the original selection.Transform Transform lets you move, rotate, or scale polygon components (edges, vertices, faces, and UVs) relative to the normal while creating a history node. Select Edit Mesh Transform to set the Transform Components Options.FlipSwaps the position of selected components with their mirrored counterparts across an axis of symmetry. See Symmetrize asymmetrical components.Vertex Average Vertices Smooths the polygon mesh by moving the positions of the vertices. Unlike Mesh Smooth, the Average command does not increase the number of polygons in the mesh. Select Edit Mesh Average Vertices to set the Average Vertices Options. Chamfer Vertices Replaces a vertex with a flat polygon face.Select Edit Mesh Chamfer Vertices to set the Chamfer Vertices Options.Edge Delete Edge/Vertex Deletes blatant edges or vertices from the polygon mesh depending on what components are selected. When vertices are selected, it removes any shared vertices that are selected on the mesh. Shared edges associated with the selected vertices are also removed as a result. The faces surrounding the deleted vertices and edges are replaced with a single n-sided polygon created from the vertices surrounding the deleted vertex. To do this we use a material with VrayEdgesTex in the diffuse slot of a standard vray material with all other settings as standard. For the all the newbies here press (M) to get the Material Editor up and select an empty slot. Rename the material to something like "clay wire-frame" and click the standard slot to change the material and select VRayMtl from the list. The standard vray material defaults to 50% grey in the colour slot, if you want the base colour to be different then you can change it if you want. Joints let you transform a skeleton when posing and animating a bound model. Bones do not have nodes, and they do not have a physical or calculable presence in your scene. Bones are only visual cues that illustrate the relationships between joints. Anatomical joint types Various joint attributes determine how joints behave. By adjusting the attributes of a joint, you can limit how far a joint can rotate or restrict what planes it can rotate about. For example, to create a joint chain that moves and rotates like the human neck, you would set the degrees of freedom for the joints so that they rotate about only 2 axes and then you would limit each joints range of rotation. In 3ds Max, you can model many such objects using a single primitive. You can also combine primitives into more complex objects, and further refine them with modifiers. A collection of standard primitive objects 3ds Max includes a set of 10 basic primitives (see also Extended Primitives). You can easily create the primitives with the mouse in the viewport (see Creating an Object), and most can be generated from the keyboard as well. These primitives are listed in the Object Type rollout and on the Create menu. Tip: While creating a primitive that requires two or more steps, such as Cylinder or Torus, you can use the mouse to pan and orbit the viewport between steps. To pan the viewport, drag with the middle mouse button or scroll the mouse wheel. To orbit the viewport, hold down Alt and drag with the middle mouse button or scroll the mouse wheel. Also available on the Object Type rollout is the AutoGrid option, which lets you create an object on the surface of another object. You can convert standard primitive objects to editable mesh objects, editable poly objects, and NURBS surfaces. All primitives have name and color controls, and allow you to enter initial values from the keyboard. Pyramid The Pyramid primitive has a square or rectangular base and triangular sides. Teapot The Teapot primitive produces a composite object comprising a lid, body, handle, and spout. Plane The Plane object is a special type of flat polygon mesh that can be enlarged by any amount at render time. You can magnify the size or number of segments, or both.
