ArchiCAD Basic Training Lesson 28 | Site Modeling Basics | QuickStart Course Excerpt

49:15
http://www.acbestpractices.com/quickstart - Learn how to build a terrain model in ArchiCAD using the mesh tool, in this excerpt from Eric Bobrow's Best Practices QuickStart Course. It is the 28th out of 29 lessons, the longest one in the entire series. This meaty 49 minute lesson will teach you how to import a DWG survey file into a Worksheet, then use it as a Trace Reference to build a terrain mesh. You'll be able to model your site in the most expeditious and efficient sequence when you follow the method I share with you. YOU MAY DOWNLOAD THIS VIDEO FROM THIS PAGE: http://www.acbestpractices.com/quickstart-part-7-2/ If you've ever struggled to build a terrain model, or made one that was overly detailed and slowed down your 3D views, this detailed training will point you in the right direction. Even if you have never used the mesh tool, you'll learn enough to get started, and after watching the lesson you'll be able to do it yourself! -- BONUS: Sample files you can use to follow along, in both Imperial and Metric systems. This is real training, not just tips and tricks! -- Survey DWG file for USA (imperial units) users (zipped) http://www.acbestpractices.com/member-download/QUICKSTART-SITE-SURVEY-(USA).dwg.zip -- Survey DWG file for International (metric units) users (zipped) http://www.acbestpractices.com/member-download/QUICKSTART-SITE-SURVEY-(INT).dwg.zip WHERE TO GET MORE VIDEOS LIKE THIS ONE This lesson is part of my new QuickStart Course, a 13 hour series of easy to follow video lessons that cover the basics of ArchiCAD with a Best Practices perspective. L3Deformer - Surface Deformer

03:22
L3Deformer -- Surface Deformer (4/4) We are completing the L3 previews with the announcement of the Surface Deformer, the fourth tool contained in the L3Deformer bundle. The following video shows some features of this deformer. The Surface Deformer projects objects from a user defined plane onto a nurbs surface. Typical applications include text and logo animation, motion graphics effects, geometry shaping, procedural liquid surfaces, particle flows and many more. When using the Surface Deformer as modelling tool you can combine the advantages of smooth, parametric nurbs surfaces with few control points and detailed polygon surfaces without topological restrictions. Thus modelling of complex shapes can be done easily on a world plane and is projected into final form using the Surface Deformer. Revolved objects like tires with complex tread pattern are a good example. You can use 2D/3D texture networks and paint maps using Artisan to control geometry or particle placement and movement on the surface. Thus you can e.g. adjust thickness and displacement locally on the surface. You can also control the surface normal by modifying polar/inclination values or applying a bend effect. Textures and paintable maps are excellent detailing tools even if the underlying nurbs surface does not provide that amount of detail. You can also use an optional second surface to control position and alignment of geometry/particles between primary and secondary surface. Using UVN remap curves you can modify coordinate mapping from projection plane to nurbs surface which has a linear 1:1 correlation by default. Thus you can easily squash or stretch parts of an object or control acceleration when moving particles along a surface. These remap curves can also be used to even out (equalize) local nurbs surface regions without the need to modify or rebuild the nurbs isoparm/control vertex layout. The tool provides a set of display options to ease both setup and tuning. It can draw colored lines to highlight the UV start isoparms of the nurbs surface and display the original, non deformed input points. When painting maps using Artisan the Surface Deformer uses an internal display method including drawing precision settings and automatic display switching depending on the map you currently paint on. Release Date: 30.05.2011 Availability: Maya 2011, 2012 Windows

L3Deformer - Sculpt Bracer

05:23
This video tutorial shows how to wrap a flat modelled leather bracer onto a wrist nurbs geometry. The bracer is shaped using the nurbs surface. The paint tool is used to apply thickness and displacement maps that demonstrate how to work in UVN nurbs space. The tutorial shows many paint specific features like display options, display and adjustment of map value display clipping and much more. Unfortunately this video still does not show how deep the Surface Deformer integrates into Maya's construction history. You can at any time toggle the "intermediate" flag of the original geometry off and start editing it, e.g. to insert or delete edges, move components around, add new geometric detail, etc. Since maps are painted and stored within the Surface Deformer you can at any time replace the base nurbs surface and the deformed geometry and still maintain every map you painted. In addition all effects are cumulative. This means you can paint a thickness map, add a thickness texture node network on top and control thickness with the global factor attribute.

From Maya to Houdini - Modeling & Texturing Tutorial

44:09
What this tutorial is: It's aimed at users who are coming from Maya and are trying to figure out how Houdini works in regards to modeling and texturing. It goes over the basics of creating objects, adding edges, merging verts, manipulating the geometry, extruding geometry, creating uv layouts, creating uv maps to paint, creating basic materials and putting it altogether. What it isn't: It is not a tutorial on how to use Houdini. There's more than enough of that out there already. It also isn't a tutorial on how to model - and if this is your level of modeling, I suggest you look into another area of 3D. I'll show you the tools and how to use them and we'll come up with a crappy model at the end of it. I'm not a modeler, nor do I enjoy doing it, but some folks are interested in how to make the transition from Maya to Houdini so I figured I'd make a video on it. It also isn't the be all and end all of modeling tutorials and there are some issues which are pointed out below. Who am I: I'm John P. Neumann (aka ArrantSquid) and I'm a Technical Artist. I rig, write mel and python and am a really nice guy. If you're more interested in those things then I would point you to my website to check out some of my tutorials, scripts and other little handy dandy things: http://AnimateShmanimate.com Addendum: My voices volume drops at one point till the end of the video. I apologize for this, but my wife and kids had just gone to sleep so i had to lower my decibel - we all live in one room. In the mirror part of the tutorial I turned the normal option to "No" and we subsequently got that ugly black line in there. The normals need to be put on "Reverse" and that'll go away. You can smooth the geometry after applying the material without any issues that I saw. However, I don't know if that would apply across all models. ------------ Houdini crashed on me no less than 4 times during the making of this so if you see jumps in the video it's because I had to cut it when it did that. It's a bit frustrating however, I wasn't running the latest nightly builds so that may have contributed to it. It still pissed me off though.
