Horizontal Directional Drilling - how it works
3D animation that shows the technique of Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) Directional drilling (or slant drilling) is the practice for drilling non-vertical wells. Obstacles and other objects can be by-passed using this computer controlled technique. With HDD, the drilling equipment, which connects to the drilling tube on the surface, pulls the cable, casing pipes or pipeline through the ground. This avoids the need for costly excavation. The drilling process is divided into 3 steps: 1. Pilot (drill head or drill bit) 2. Reaming (by a fly-cutter) 3. Pull-in (barrel reamer) Produced by: http://www.studiolex.nl Commissioned by: http://www.vshanab.nl HDD wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Directional_drilling Music: Appetite for Beats by Jacek Dojwa - Partners in Rhyme: http://www.partnersinrhyme.com/royaltyfreemusic/Ambient-Chill-Music-and-Electronica/Groove-Salad-Vol-3

Expando saves the day, rock breaking with Chemical Cracking Agent
Another rock removal job where the customer did not want to use explosives. This is a home site excavation where we had to deal with some hard Lilydale formation (Coldstream Rhyolite), this is a metamorphic rock - mudstone that has been baked. Generally an excavator mounted breaker is not very successful when trying to break up this stuff so we drilled it full of holes and filled it with "Expando". We came back in a few days with a small machine fitted with a breaker and rattled out the pieces.

Drilling rig
A drilling rig is a machine which creates holes in the ground. Drilling rigs can be massive structures housing equipment used to drill water wells, oil wells, or natural gas extraction wells, or they can be small enough to be moved manually by one person and are called augers. sample sub-surface mineral deposits, test rock, soil and groundwater physical properties, and also can be used to install sub-surface fabrications, such as underground utilities, instrumentation, tunnels or wells. Drilling rigs can be mobile equipment mounted on trucks, tracks or trailers, or more permanent land or marine-based structures (such as oil platforms, commonly called 'offshore oil rigs' even if they don't contain a drilling rig). The term "rig" therefore generally refers to the complex of equipment that is used to penetrate the surface of the Earth's crust. This video is targeted to blind users. Shale gas
Shale gas is natural gas that is found trapped within shale formations. Shale gas has become an increasingly important source of natural gas in the United States since the start of this century, and interest has spread to potential gas shales in the rest of the world. In 2000 shale gas provided only 1% of U.S. natural gas production; by 2010 it was over 20% and the U.S. government's Energy Information Administration predicts that by 2035, 46% of the United States' natural gas supply will come from shale gas. Some analysts expect that shale gas will greatly expand worldwide energy supply. China is estimated to have the world's largest shale gas reserves. A study by the Baker Institute of Public Policy at Rice University concluded that increased shale gas production in the US and Canada could help prevent Russia and Persian Gulf countries from dictating higher prices for the gas they export to European countries. Ground water monitoring Test hole drilling Product recovery Economic/irrigation water systems City well drilling, well fix/upkeep Turbine pump sales and service Civic pump systems and sales Geothermal systems Residential water systems Some of the services you can get from a drilling contractor include aquifer storage and recovery wells, which are a speciality of many companies. Huge diameter production wells are typically installed for farming and public water supply. Deep injection wells for disposal of treated domestic wastewater, and chloride profile, monitor and other test wells also are a part of the inventory. Environmental wells have been built to extract unsafe waste and to watch the subsurface movement of hazardous waste plumes. Sometimes it is easily worth seeking out a diversified rotary drilling organisation offering unique mud and air rotary drilling services to a range of industries. Service groups can include water supply, environmental, energy, mining, and pump services and rehabilitation. Drilling methods can include air hammer, air rotary, twin tube reverse air rotary, treble tube air rotary, odex-centris casing drivers, mud rotary, dual tube flooded reverse rotary, horizontal drilling and directional drilling services. A well established company can supply tooling for hole diameters from 5 inches to 60 inches, with depths beyond 5,000 feet. These services include environmental (monitoring, vapour extraction, rectification wells), water wells (domestic and massive diameter wells up to 30-inch diameter and 1,250 feet), geotechnical (SPT, soil survey, piezometer), construction (caissons up to 8-foot diameter, cathodic protection) and pump services (up to 600 Hp and 5,000 gpm, enormous production well systems, correction systems). The management and supervisory staff of many companies have a number of years of experience in the water well industry. In this situation they can frequently provide complete water well systems on a turnkey basis, offering the thorough range of services required to provide stylishly designed, constructed and maintained municipal and industrial water wells. These contractors will also occasionally have the capability to provide every component of a water well system, including test hole drilling, well casing and screen selection and installation, gravel packing, grout sealing, well development and testing, pump selection, and equipment sales and installation. If you select wisely, you'll almost surely get your drilling work done exactly as you hope for. Nuclear Power and Bomb Testing Documentary Film
The Waste Isolation Pilot Plant, or WIPP, is the world's third deep geological repository (after closure of Germany's Repository for radioactive waste Morsleben and the Schacht Asse II Salt Mine) licensed to permanently dispose of transuranic radioactive waste for 10,000 years that is left from the research and production of nuclear weapons. It is located approximately 26 miles (42 km) east of Carlsbad, New Mexico, in eastern Eddy County. In order to address growing public unrest concerning construction of the WIPP, the New Mexico Environmental Evaluation Group (EEG) was created in 1978. This group, charged with overseeing the WIPP, verified statements, facts, and studies conducted and released by the DOE regarding the facility. The stewardship this group provided effectively lowered public fear and let the facility progress with little public opposition in comparison to similar facilities around the nation such as Yucca Mountain in Nevada. The EEG, in addition to acting as a check for the government agencies overseeing the project, acted as a valuable advisor. In a 1981 drilling, pressurized brine was again discovered. The site was set to be abandoned when the EEG stepped in and suggested a series of tests on the brine and the surrounding area. These tests were conducted and the results showed that the brine deposit was relatively small and was isolated from other deposits. Drilling in the area was deemed safe due to these results. This saved the project valuable money and time by preventing a drastic relocation. In 1979 Congress authorized construction of the facility. In addition to formal authorization, Congress redefined the level of waste to be stored in the WIPP from high temperature to transuranic, or low level, waste. Transuranic waste often consists of materials which have come in contact with radioactive substances such as plutonium and uranium. This often includes gloves, tools, rags, and assorted machinery often used in the production of nuclear fuel and weapons. Although much less potent than nuclear reactor byproducts, this waste still remains radioactive for approximately 24,000 years. This change in classification led to a decrease in safety parameters for the proposed facility, allowing construction to continue at a faster pace. The first extensive testing of the facility was due to begin in 1988. The proposed testing procedures involved interring samples of low level waste in the newly constructed caverns. Various structural and environmental tests would then be performed on the facility to verify its integrity and to prove its ability to safely contain nuclear waste. Opposition from various external organizations delayed actual testing into the early 1990s. Attempts at testing were resumed in October 1991 with US Secretary of Energy James Watkins announcing that he would begin transportation of waste to the WIPP. Despite apparent progress on the facility, construction still remained costly and complicated. Originally conceptualized in the 1970s as a warehouse for waste, the repository now had regulations similar to those of nuclear reactors. As of December 1991, the plant had been under construction for 20 years and was estimated to have cost over one billion dollars. At the time, WIPP officials reported over 28 different organizations claiming authority over operations of the facility. In November 1991, a federal judge ruled that Congress must approve WIPP before any waste, even for testing purposes, was sent to the facility. This indefinitely delayed testing until Congress gave its approval. The 102nd United States Congress passed legislation allowing use of the WIPP. The House of Representatives approved the facility on October 6, 1992 and the Senate passed a bill allowing the opening of the facility on October 8 of the same year. The bill was met with much opposition in the Senate. Senator Richard H. Bryan fought the bill based on safety issues that concerned a similar facility located in Nevada, the state for which he was serving as senator. His efforts almost prevented the bill from passing. New Mexico senators Pete V. Domenici and Jeff Bingaman effectively reassured Senator Bryan that these issues would be addressed in the 103rd Congress. The final legislation provided safety standards requested by the House and an expedited timeline requested by the Senate. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Waste_Isolation_Pilot_Plant

AD 9–23), and Eastern Han (25–220 CE, when the capital was at Luoyang, and after 196 CE at Xuchang), witnessed some of the most significant advancements in premodern Chinese science and technology. There were great innovations in metallurgy. In addition to Zhou-dynasty China's (c. 1050 – 256 BCE) previous inventions of the blast furnace and cupola furnace to make pig iron and cast iron, respectively, the Han period saw the development of steel and wrought iron by use of the finery forge and puddling process. With the drilling of deep boreholes into the earth, the Chinese used not only derricks to lift brine up to the surface to be boiled into salt, but also set up bamboo-crafted pipeline transport systems which brought natural gas as fuel to the furnaces. Smelting techniques were enhanced with inventions such as the waterwheel-powered bellows; the resulting widespread distribution of iron tools facilitated the growth of agriculture. For tilling the soil and planting straight rows of crops, the improved heavy-moldboard plough with three iron plowshares and sturdy multiple-tube iron seed drill were invented in the Han, which greatly enhanced production yields and thus sustained population growth. The method of supplying irrigation ditches with water was improved with the invention of the mechanical chain pump powered by the rotation of a waterwheel or draft animals, which could transport irrigation water up elevated terrains. The waterwheel was also used for operating trip hammers in pounding grain and in rotating the metal rings of the mechanical-driven astronomical armillary sphere representing the celestial sphere around the Earth. The quality of life was improved with many Han inventions. The Han Chinese had hempen-bound bamboo scrolls to write on, yet by the 2nd century CE had invented the papermaking process which created a writing medium that was both cheap and easy to produce. The invention of the wheelbarrow aided in the hauling of heavy loads. The maritime junk ship and stern-mounted steering rudder enabled the Chinese to venture out of calmer waters of interior lakes and rivers and into the open sea. The invention of the g ...
