This short film tells in stark detail the stories of some of the victims at the North Mara Gold Mine in Tanzania operated by UK listed company, Acacia Mining. The mine has been plagued by human rights problems. Barrick Gold Corporation, is the majority shareholder of Acacia Mining, holding 63 per cent. Since 2014, at least 22 people have been killed and 69 injured, many by bullet wounds, at or near the remote mine in security related incidents, according to research conducted by RAID and MiningWatch Canada (MWC). Nine women and girls have been raped. A Tanzanian parliamentary inquiry set up to look into the problem in 2016, received 65 reports of killings and 270 people injured by police responsible for mine security. Tanzania is actually a rich country - rich in natural resources. Industrial mining companies have been exploiting Tanzania's gold deposits since the turn of the millennium. But, as in so many of Africa's resource-rich countries, the profits end up in the hands of a very few. Every day, in a gold mine in the country's northwest, rich and poor meet when hundreds of local villagers illegally invade the premises. The Canadian mining corporation Barrick Gold tries to keep the trespassers out, but many people have already lost their lives. Powered by NewsLook.com

Mugini Jacob, VoicesofAfrica mobile reporter in the Mara region, Tanzania (13 October 2010) The relationship between villagers living near the North Mara Gold Mine and Barrick Africa Gold, a Canadian miner which operates the mine is likely to improve following introduction of soccer competitions that bring the two sides together. The relationship between villagers living near the North Mara Gold Mine and Barrick Africa Gold, a Canadian miner which operates the mine is likely to improve following introduction of soccer competitions that bring the two sides together. The first match that involved teams from the local villagers and workers of the mining company was held here last weekend. The villagers welcomed the initiative, saying that it might help to end poor relationship that has existed between the Canadian investor and the communities residing near the mine for years. 'Sports will help because when we go back at homes even these they will bring a lot of awareness and our relationship with the mine will be good', says Mr Sele Chacha. Mr Daudi Itembe, a local villager leader describes the soccer cups as a good start but stresses that the mine is suppose to do more than that if it was determined to enhance relationship with the local communities. 'We have also talks with the mine and I believe we are going to open a new page', the local leader says. The Mine's General Manager Mr Kevin Moxam believes that sports will play a significant role to endless conflicts in the mine. The mining company has always been complaining that it spends a huge chunk of money to prevent crimes targeting it's operation at the mine that is situated in Tarime district , few kilometers from the world famous Serengeti National Park. A number of civilians have been shot dead by police officers for allegedly invading the mine to grab gold sand in the recent years. A section of Tanzanians complains that the nation does not reap fruits of mining industry which had attracted serious investors in the past few years. Barrick is currently the leading gold mining company investor operating several gold mines in Tanzania.

subscribe my channel and support and get more videos Canada’s Barrick Gold is swallowing African operator Randgold Resources in a takeover worth roughly US$6-billion that will ensure In a release, Mr. Thornton said that the merger comes with no premiums because “we strongly believe in the opportunity to add significant value for our shareholders from the disciplined management of our combined asset base and a focus on truly profitable growth.” Mark Bristow, the well-regarded CEO of Randgold is to become the CEO of the enlarged company, which will retain the Barrick name. Mr. Thornton, a former president of Goldman Sachs, will remain as executive chairman. Graham Shuttleworth, Randgold’s current chief financial officer, takes the CFO role at the combined company with Barrick’s current CFO Catherine Raw becoming chief operating officer North America. “The combination of Barrick and Randgold will create a new champion for value creation in the gold mining industry, bringing together the world’s largest collection of tier one assets, Under the merger terms, each Randgold shareholder will receive 6.128 new Barrick shares for each Randgold share. The merger would see Barrick shareholders own 66.6 per cent of the enlarged company; Randgold shareholders would own the rest. The deal is expected to close in early 2019. Mr. Thornton has praised Randgold and Mr. Bristow. Randgold’s returns on capital are routinely the highest, or close to them, in the gold sector. “Our industry has been criticized for its short-term focus, undisciplined growth and poor returns on invested capital,” Mr. Bristow said, in a statement. “The merged company will be very different. Its goal will be to deliver sector leading returns.” Unlike Barrick Gold, which has taken billions in write-downs over the years , Randgold has never “written down a penny,” Mr. Thornton said in a conference call with analysts on Monday. Another big advantage of the acquisition for Barrick shareholders according to Mr. Thornton is it is buying a competitor with a proven ability to operate in one of the most challenging jurisdictions in the world. i.e. Africa. Barrick’s subsidiary Acacia Mining PLC, which operates in Africa is currently subject to a gold export ban in Tanzania. Last year, the Tanzanian government accused Acacia of US$200-billion in tax fraud. The combined company will have five tier-one mines, three from Barrick and two from Randgold. Barrick defines a tier 1 mine as one that produces 500,000 ounces of gold a year, has a life of more than 10 years and is low cost. Randgold owns mines in Mali, Ivory Coast, Senegal and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The deal means Barrick likely won’t lose its spot as the world’s biggest gold producer after all. Last year, after Barrick’s production fell to to 5.3 million ounces of gold and the company predicted up to 5 million ounces for this year, it looked like Newmont Mining Corp., which forecast it will produce as much as 5.4 million ounces for 2018 would soon surpass Barrick. By swallowing Randgold, Barrick gains about 1.3 million extra ounces a year in production, which would put it comfortably ahead of its U.S. competitor. In an interview with The Globe and Mail in London earlier this month, Mr. Thornton said he had thrown out the traditional “chasing ounces” growth model in the industry and would focus on free cash flow – the money left over after capital expenditures and operating costs are paid. As CEO, Mr. Bristow will be responsible for the day to day operations of running Barrick. Executive chair Mr. Thornton will work with the board of directors and also continue to work on relationship building with countries like China and deal with geopolitical matters. Both Mr. Bristow and Mr. Thornton will jointly make decisions on large strategic and macro matters. One analyst asked Mr. Bristow whether there is risk for Randgold, which is known for its nimble, decentralized business model, in combining with the much bigger Barrick. “Our intention is to implement the Randgold way,” said Mr. Bristow, which he explained is a flat management structure, with an emphasis on efficiency and the ability to make quick decisions. “John [Thornton] has done a lot of work in cleaning up the baggage,” he added. “There is no culture clash amongst the senior executives between Randgold and Barrick.” Under the terms of the deal, Randgold will cease to trade on the London Stock Exchange. The new combined company will trade on the New York and Toronto stock exchanges. The deal is subject to majority shareholder approval from Barrick’s shareholders and 75 per cent approval from Randgold’s shareholders. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCXeUNeygmZPIOgvCWxAkUw #barrick #barrick gold news #randgold stock #zijin mining #randgold resources #rangold

Who gets to decide? Filmmaker Suzan Beraza documents the debate in her new film Uranium Drive-In. Rhinos are killed for their horn. But now in South Africa they face a new threat -- coal. Plans for an open cast coal mine on the border of Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park, home to the largest population in the world of the once endangered white rhino, may bring economic development. However, these plans will also worsen air and water quality and increase poaching and crime. Jeff Barbee reports from South Africa. The indigenous people in Ecuador's Kimsakocha wetlands rely on the land's water for their livelihood -- agriculture and livestock production. But there is gold under the water and foreign mining companies are out to get it. The local people mount a fierce opposition. "Resistance will not end, we will not give up even if we are in prison," says local community leader Carlos Perez. Constantino de Miguel reports from Ecuador.

A CBC Documentary Prospectors John Larch, Don McKinnon and Richard Hughes discovered gold in the Hemlo camp in the early 1980s, starting a staking rush not seen in Canada since the Klondike gold rush of the late 19th century. Two companies, Golden Sceptre and Goliath Resources, secured rights to a large land package in the area, and were subsequently acquired by Noranda. Noranda permitted and built the Golden Giant mine in less than two years. With its first pour in April, 1985, the Golden Giant was the first mine in the camp to ship. Peak production occurred in the early 1990s, approaching 500,000 oz per year. During its 21-year life, the mine produced over 6 million ounces of gold. (from Wikipedia)

Mugini Jacob, VoicesofAfrica mobile reporter in the Mara region, Tanzania (31 October 2010) About 150 primary and secondary school teachers working with public schools adjacent North Mara Gold Mine have been angered by a tour which they made into the mine recently . The tour was organised by the Barrick African Gold, a Canadian giant miner which operates the mine as part of the company's efforts to improve it's relationship with the surrounding communities. The teachers had expected to visit several areas including the gold processing plant but end up visiting rich ponds that contain water containing acid. 'We are not satisfied with this tour because we have not been taken to essentials areas that we wanted to visit', most of the teachers lamented shortly after winding up the long day tout into the mine. But according to the Mine's Environmental Coordinator Mr Delphinus Kabalega the tour was meant to familiarize the teachers on efforts taken by the mine conserve environment in the area. A few months ago the mine become into spotlight after it discharged water containing harmful toxic into sources of water and residential areas of the local communities.

Africa contains an estimated 30 per cent of the world's mineral resources. Natural resources have accounted for about 35 per cent of Africa's growth since 2000. Nonetheless, international investors and mining companies remain cautious, owing to Africa's never-ending challenges, including a lack of infrastructure, power and political instability, to name a few. On this CNBC Africa special we look back at 2016 and what trends we may see this year.

If you live and work in Canada, chances are you’re connected to Canadian mining companies whether you know it or not through your savings, taxes, Canada Pension Plan contributions, RRSPs and other investments. "We Call Them Intruders" (previously titled "Plenty's Paradox") is a documentary that travels from Canada to Africa and back again to unearth the stories behind some of the continent’s largest Canadian-owned mining projects. Approximately 70 people gathered outside the University of Toronto's Munk School of Global Affairs for a commemoration held for the seven individuals killed in Tanzania at African Barrick Gold's North Mara Mine. Peter Munk, who recently donated $35million to the University, is the founder of Barrick Gold. Public outcry over this violence has been amplified by recent reports that local security/police forces employed by the mine have attempted to ban a memorial ceremony for the deceased. To the horror of many local families, these security forces also stole 5 of the 7 peoples' bodies from the mortuary. The violence surrounding Barrick's North Mara mine has been ongoing since the company first arrived in the region. Mass displacements, lost livelihoods, contaminated water and the resulting health impacts are at the root of the ongoing violence. Walkabout Resources Ltd (ASX:WKT) non-executive director Andrew Cunningham updates Proactive Investors on the graphite company’s grant of a Tanzanian mining licence, and the planned development to bring its Lindi Jumbo Graphite Project into production. “We are the first ASX-listed company to get our mining licence under the new Tanzanian legislation, to say we’re excited is probably the understatement of the century,” Cunningham says. Granting of the mining licence allows Walkabout to further progress advanced project funding options. The project hosts a JORC 2012-compliant measured, indicated and inferred mineral resource of 29.8 million tonnes at an estimated grade of 10.9 % total graphitic carbon (TGC). This resource contains a super high-grade core of 4.7 million tonnes at 22.8% TGC for 1,076,500 tonnes of contained graphite, making it the highest mineable graphite resource in Tanzania.

Everlyn Gaupe and Jocelyn Mandi partner with Mining Watch Canada, the Mining Injustice Solidarity Network, ProtestBarrick.Net and Silence is Violence at the University of Toronto for an evening discussing Barrick Gold's human rights violations in Porgera, Papua New Guinea. They've come from Porgera to Toronto to confront Barrick shareholders and investors at the annual AGM on April 25th, and speak to audiences across North America about their work to hold the world's largest mining company accountable. After years of denying cases of sexual assault, Canadian mining company Barrick Gold compensated 119 women and girls who were victims of sexual violence by mine security to the tune of ~$10,000 each for these abuses, but had them sign an agreement that they could never sue the company. Eleven of the women refused this remedy package and threatened to sue the company, resulting in a higher out of court settlement. Since that time, the 119 women who originally accepted the money from Barrick have organized into women's groups and started to demand more dignified treatment from the company. Many others have never received any compensation at all, as allegations of sexual violence continue.

Once a year, the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada (PDAC) throws the world's largest mining convention in downtown Toronto. This year, the convention featured a track on Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) that was open to the public. The final session of this track was a CEO panel featuring Jamie Sokalsky, the CEO of Barrick Gold. While Sokalsky tried to present Barrick's CSR program as more than just window dressing, I got ahold of the mic to draw attention to the very real and on-going human rights abuses at two of Barrick's mine sites, first in North Mara, Tanzania and then in Porgera, Papua New Guinea. Unfazed by the fact that they turned off my mic, I raised my voice to speak louder about the scale of the devastation in Papua New Guinea. Finally, the security escorted me out as I handed out footnoted fact sheets to the audience at the forum. Barrick's entire board and shareholders will gather this April 24 in Downtown Toronto's Metro Convention Centre's John Basset Theatre at 10am. Please come and confront Barrick yourself... don't let them get away with denying the destruction their are imposing on other communities! FACT SHEET: http://protestbarrick.net/article.php?id=868 This is the text of the fact sheet I distributed at the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada (PDAC) conference in Toronto on March 5, 2013. It is just the tip of the iceberg regarding Barrick's abuses, but enough points to prove a point that Barrick does not promote sustainable development at their mine sites. The fact sheet also debunks the myth that self-reporting can replace regulation and independent monitoring of mining activity. camera: Zach Ruiter director: Sakura Saunders editors: Zach Ruiter and Sakura Saunders music: Illogik, "The Path"

Canadian Author Alain Deneault discusses the little-known fact about Canadian mining companies. Alain Deneault is a sociologist at the University of Quebec in Montreal. He is co-author of "Black Canada: Pillage, Corruption, and Criminality in Africa," a book that details well-sourced human rights abuses by the multinational resource companies Barrick Gold and Banro Corporation. The companies have responded with $11 million in lawsuits, aimed at bankrupting their critics with court fees. and the publisher for a total of $11 million. Deneault's main areas of research are George Simmel's economic work and the phenomenon of economic criminality in the context of globalization. His numerous publications on Simmel and economic criminality include "L'Argent dans la culture moderne" (Presses de L'Université Laval, 2006). His recent book is "Offshore: Tax Havens and the Rule of Global Crime." In this new book, he makes a compeling paradigm-shifting new argument that views offshore tax havens as the platform for the criminal control of a large part of the global economy.

Tanzania plans to further tighten controls on its mining sector to maximise the benefits from its wealth of natural resources. President John Magufuli has defended the government's recent introduction of new regulations. They're aimed at ensuring that the benefits of the sector are shared more equitably with the state. President Magufuli has promised to root out tax evasion, corruption and mismanagement in the sector. Tanzania has vast deposits of natural gas, coal, diamonds, uranium and gemstones. Gold exports alone earned Tanzania $1.27 billion in 2015. Major gold mining companies in Tanzania include Acacia Mining and AngloGold Ashanti.

WHO IS BARRICK GOLD? Barrick Gold is the world's largest gold mining company, founded and chaired by Peter Munk. With a former Prime Minister on their board and former executives sitting on the board of the Canadian Pension Plan, Barrick enjoys government funding and diplomatic support. WHY PROTEST BARRICK? Barrick Gold takes advantage of inadequate and poorly enforced regulatory controls to rob Indigenous Peoples and communities of their land and livelihoods, destroying sensitive ecosystems, supporting brutal military and security operations, and suing anyone who dares to report on it. Impacted communities are coming to Toronto to confront Barrick, sharing their own undeniable perspectives and shedding light on the ongoing corporate impunity. MAKE THE TRANSFORMATION AWAY FROM GOLD EXTRACTION! WHY? With the majority of gold used for jewelry or to store wealth and the majority of gold extraction destruction on Indigenous lands around the world. It is time to question humans ongoing obsession with gold. HOW? Through reduction, recycling and reuse of gold there can be a halt on new and expanding gold mining explorations and operations around the world.
