Randsburg - California Ghost Towns

03:47
California Travel Tips host Veronica Hill (http://www.CaliforniaTravelExpert.com) heads into the Mojave Desert to check out Randsburg Ghost Town. Located in Kern County along scenic Highway 395, Randsburg is one of California's few "living" ghost towns, home to approximately 80 residents. The Rand Mining District was established in 1895, when gold was discovered in the Rand mountains. It's estimated that Randsburg produced more than $60 million in gold during its boom. There also was plenty of tungsten ore and silver. One of the most productive gold mines was the Yellow Aster, which yielded $25 million between 1895 and 1933. Be sure to check out the Randsburg Jail, located at the entrance to town, then head inside the Rand Desert Museum, where you'll find mining exhibits, memorabilia and artifacts from the Rand Mining District. Be sure to say hi to curator J. Bart Parker, and tell him we said hello! Most of Randsburg's surviving Old West buildings are located along Butte Avenue. The Santa Barbara Catholic Church dates back to 1904, but the first church was built here in 1897. The Randsburg Post Office dates back to 1896. On holidays, local thespians don period costumes for plays and melodramas at the Randsburg Opera House. The Randsburg General Store is the hub of action in Randsburg, especially during the fall when the weather cools off and ATV riders arrive. You have to order the Black Bart. It's a signature item here! Built in 1896 as the Jones Drug Store, this popular hangout is a huge draw for tourists who fuel up on burgers and sandwiches, washed down with a phosphate soda. The building still has its original tin ceilings, light fixtures and soda fountain dating back to 1904. For a bit of wild west nostalgia, head into the White House Saloon, which hosted miners, cowboys, Indians and clampers during the boom years; or check out The Joint, a local watering hole that's been here since the 1950s. If you want to stay the night, Goat's Sky Ranch is a B&B with miner's cabin rentals, or you can check into the Randsburg Inn , which sits on the former site of the Orpheum Theater, My Place Dance Hall and Commercial Hotel. One thing to consider — Randsburg literally becomes a ghost town during the week. The best time to visit is on the weekend, when most businesses are operating. Thanks for joining us in Randsburg. I'll see you next time! Story TIme with Aunt Phil, Alaska sled dog history, Dec. 14, 2017

03:38
Sled dogs have a long and illustrious career in Alaska, as shared in this episode of Alaska Story Time with Aunt Phil with author/historian Laurel Downing Bill. This segment first aired on Anchorage CBS affiliate KTVA Channel 11 Daybreak on Dec. 14, 2017. Wintertime in Alaska is synonymous with dog mushing. Historically many different races test the strength, stamina and ability of mushers and their teams from December through February. But long before men and dogs teamed up to race across Alaska, dogs proved themselves in this rugged country. Sled dogs have a long and illustrious history from the early days of Native settlements to the gold-rush booms during the 1890-1900s. When the Russians arrived on Alaska’s shores in the mid-1700s they found dogs in the villages. Natives of Alaska, northern Canada, Greenland and Siberia used dogs as winter draft animals for centuries. Russians found Alaska Natives using dogs to haul sleds loaded with fish, game, wood and other items. The Natives ran ahead of the dogs as they guided them on the yearly trips between villages and fish and hunting camps. Russians improved the dog sled system by adding handlebars to sleds and harnessing dog teams in single file or in pairs. They also trained the dogs to follow commands given by sled drivers and introduced the “lead dog” or leader. Russian exploration via dog teams was limited to Alaska’s coasts, as well as along some rivers, and followed existing Native trails between villages. Both Natives and Russians found frozen rivers also made useful winter trails. Extensive use of dogs for long-distance transportation developed as gold discoveries were made in the late 1890s and early 1900s. Stampeders quickly learned that dog teams were worth their weight in gold. Thousands of dogs were imported from the Lower 48 to help prospectors and adventurers reach the gold fields. By the turn of the century, dog teams were helping cheechakos blaze new trails to establish law and order, develop mail routes and transport gold-crazed prospectors to new strikes. When winter came, some miners hooked up their dogs and pulled Yukon sleds loaded with needed supplies to make camp at promising locations. They then spent the winter thawing ground and digging gravel. At spring breakup, the prospectors sluiced the hoped-for gold from pay dirt. At season’s end they built rafts or poling boats and floated with their dogs back downstream to the trading posts or towns. This is the way the land was prospected. The men and dogs blazed trails throughout the Turnagain Arm Mining District as well as from Valdez to Fairbanks, from Seward to the various prospects in Southcentral Alaska and in Alaska’s Interior and Seward Peninsula. By 1905, dog teams were carrying mail over 180 miles of trail between Seward and Susitna Station, a steamboat stop on the lower Susitna River that served as a supply point for dozens of mines in the foothills of the Alaska Range. The system of trails extended as goldfields were discovered to the north in the Talkeetna Mountains and the Yentna River drainage. And when gold was discovered along the Innoko River around 1906-1907, another trail was forged that would become one of the most famous sled dog trails in history – the Iditarod Trail. http://www.ktva.com/daybreak/ http://www.AuntPhilsTrunk.com http://www.Facebook.com/LaurelDowning Bill https://youtu.be/eDKn5kCgKvI LaurelDowningBillAuntPhil

Ghost Town Museum delights young and old with lots of hands on activities, including old time arcades, panning for real gold (summer months), and much, much, more. - See More at http://www.YouTube.com/AboutColoradoTV Ghost Town History Ghost Town Museum was created in 1954 to preserve a piece of Colorado's Wild West heritage. In 1858 the cry "Pikes Peak or Bust" opened up the heartland of the Colorado territory to the gold prospector. Gold mining became a significant factor that led to the statehood of Colorado. The miners and the people who provided services to them quickly populated the western frontier of the United States. They needed transportation, and before long the twin steel ribbons of the railroads were pushing into the mountains to transport ore for processing. Towns sprang up overnight and by the 1860's and 1870's people had blanketed the west. It was a rough and tumble time. Small encampments became small towns. Small cities along the rocky mountain Front Range provided a central location for supplies and services. The search for gold drove prospectors to every mountain valley, and every mountain peak. If gold or silver were not located, or if the mines played out, the towns were often abandoned to become ghost towns. Little by little the raw spirit of the frontier died down. By the time gold was discovered in Cripple Creek in 1891, the "frontier" was almost gone. Today almost nothing remains of those exciting days of the old west. A scattered pile of old lumber, a tumbled pile of rocks marking an old mine, an occasional wagon wheel or a piece of equipment. The rip roaring camps of 100 years ago have become ghost towns now only a memory of a bygone era.

The Astounding Origin and mind blowing History of the mysterious and most ancient Khasis. WHO ARE THE KHASI-JAINTIA AND WHAT IS THEIR AMAZING UNBELIEVABLE HERITAGE ??. READ And BE PREPARED TO BE STUNNED. HISTORY HAS TO BE REWRITTIEN. The DNA tests on 92 LIVING KHASIS by the Genographic Project of National Geographic and subsequently confirmed by other DNA tests prove their ancient age - 57000 years. The DNA tests should be extended to many more Khasis to confirm their real age as Khasis believe they arrived about 120000 years ago at present day Khasi-Jaintia Hills, Meghalaya at the foothills of the Himalayas. They also spread out to modern day Vietnam, China, Japan, Taiwan, Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar etc. Visit the Heritage of Japan website where Researcher Aileen Kawagoe names the Waar (War) of Jaintia Hills, Meghalaya India as one of the Genetic sources of Early Japanese. The name Japan comes from the Khasi phrase 'Ai Ja Pa' meaning 'Give me rice Father'. This gradually shortened to 'Ja Pa' meaning 'Rice Father'. Other Khasi stories tell of 'Pan Ja' meaning 'Ask for Rice' or 'Ja Pan' which literally translates into 'Rice Ask' as the origin of the name Japan. From the Khasi-Jaintia Hills, the early settlers landed by boat at the place where stands now the most ancient Kashi ma Shrine and Kashima city so named after Khasi Ma or Khasi Mei or Mei Khasi meaning Khasi Mother. Like their Khasi-Jaintia ancestors who believed that they descended from Heaven, the earliest Japanese Fudoki believed that the Kashima/Khasi Ma Celestial God descended from Heaven. The Khasi have a Sun Goddess 'Ka Sngi.' The Japanese too have a Sun Goddess - Amaterasu Omikami. The Khasis have a rooster as their most important symbol. The Rooster is an auspicious symbol for Japanese Shinto. Khasis look at a 'River' & say 'Ka Wah'. 'River' in Japanese is 'Kawa' but pronounced 'ka wah'. The Khasis never had any written history just oral history. Many secrets were passed down orally among a select few. Now with DNA technology, it is time to tell these ancient stories which would have been laughed at earlier. There are many many more ancient secrets among the Khasis and Jaintias of Meghalaya State, lying at the foothills of the Himalayas. Remember, they arrived where they are at least 57000 years ago. To put that into context, the Hindu civilization is just 5000 years old. Amanda Huang in her writing 'DNA profiles of Han Taiwanese' also links the Taiwanese with the Khasi Austro-Asiatic people. From the Khasi Hills, after arriving out of Africa, about 57000 - 120000 years ago, the Khasis spread all over the world. They set up the Sumerian, Babylonian & Phoenician kingdoms. Their traces are found in so many places. Herodotus, the ancient Greek historian called Britain Cassiteriades or Kassiterides, the Khasi Tin Islands. They were all over Britain but were called different names. They mined Tin, Gold, Silver and grew wheat. Their ancient name for Britain was Ka Dew Lynnong Pyrdain or The Isle of Pyrdain meaning in Khasi ‘The Island of Wisdom’. They also called Britain 'Bilat' after the White Limestone Cliffs of Dover.Julius Caesar names a Cassi tribe which fought against the Romans under their Chief Cassi-Vellaunus. Caesar landed around the Wantsum or Wansum Channel and crossed the River Thames at the Kew ford. 'Wan Sum' in Khasi means 'Come and bathe'. The Kew or Quay Hoh Gardens are named after the Cassi or Khasi harvest chant Hoh Kew or Hoi Kew. Kew means wheat in Khasi & the Cassi tribe is known to have grown wheat in Britain. The Khasi / Cassi name for the third largest city of Roman Britain was Hangne-ruh-la-mih-Um, later shortened to Uerulamium and then to Verulamium. In Khasi it meant 'Here too water has come out'. 'La Mih Um' means 'Water has come out'. Present day Colchester city was known in pre-Roman times as Ca-mulo-don-um. 'Ka mluh don um' is a Khasi phrase meaning 'There is salt in the water'. The old name of Thames in Khasi is Them Sum. The area around the Thames was then a low-lying area covered in water, much more than now. 'Them' in Khasi means low-lying. 'Them Sum' means 'low-lying area for bathing'. It gradually became Thames. Ask any Khasi. He will say that Cheddar Man looks like a typical rural Khasi villager. THE PHOENICIAN TIN MINES OF CASSITERIDES OR CORNWALL - Tin which was used in many parts of the then world was partly obtained from the Phoenician Tin-mines of Ancient Britain. The Ictis or Mictis name was applied by the Greeks to the Phoenician tinport at St. Michael's Mount in Cornwall, on the Sea of Icht. This Western Tin-land was "The country of the Kussaia or Kassi people," It thus would account for the name "Cassi-terides"; and Kassi is sometimes spelt with u in cuneiform script. The Greek word for Tin was Kassiteros because it was the Phoenicians otherwise known as the Kassi who were famous for mining Tin. In Britain, they were broadly known as the Keltic tribes. Calico Ghost Town

03:21
SUBSCRIBE! http://tinyurl.com/p2fveuj California travel expert Veronica Hill of http://www.CaliforniaTravelExpert.com tours Calico Ghost Town in this episode of "California Travel Tips." Many of these abandoned mining communities, which thrived during the late 1800s, are now popular tourist attractions. Located 10 miles north of Barstow, Calico Ghost Town in Yermo was named for the rainbow-colored hills that produced one of the richest silver strikes in California history. This was a wild and wooly place with 22 saloons, its own red light district and several fine restaurants. The Calico Hotel, run by Mrs. E.L. Hazen, promised a generous welcome, first-class meals, and reasonable rates. (The original hotel is no longer standing) By 1887, there were 1,200 people living in Calico. Children of local merchants and miners attended the one-room Calico School, which sometimes doubled for church service on Sundays. Back in 1885, school teachers made about $80-$100 a month and children played games like marbles, ball and bean bag toss. Plan on a full day to explore this historic ghost town. You can relax on a rocking chair, play a game of checkers on the porch, or enjoy some good-old fashioned gold panning. Around lunchtime, grab a cool Sarsparilla and lunch plate at the Calico House Restaurant, then tour the bath house, where you'll find antique tubs, a laundry press and old west kitchen. The Blacksmith shop is home to several antique tools and equipment. Along the East Calico Hiking Trail, you'll find unique cabins carved into the rocky hillsides. Lumber was scarce, so hard rock miners were creative, sometimes even using bottles as building materials. On the Calico & Odessa narrow gauge railway, we learned that Calico had 10 major mines and more than 30 miles of underground passages. Today, the only mine safe enough to enter is the Maggie Shaft. Here, you can explore 1,000 feet of tunnel, check out the Glory Hole, and view the former sleeping dugout of miner John Mulcahy. Calico began its life in 1881 and produced more than $20 million in silver. One of Calico's most profitable mines was the Silver King. An additional $9 million in borax was harvested from Calico's Mule Canyon, where the company town of Borate was established. (This was the last place in California where Twenty Mule teams were used). Calico was deserted by the 1930s, when mining was no longer profitable. Walter Knott purchased the crumbling town in 1951 for $13,500, restoring it to its former glory. Today, Calico has five surviving original buildings. They include the Park Office, Lane's General Store, and Lil's Saloon. (Has an ATM). The Zenda Mining Company building is now home to a fortune teller. To learn more about Calico Ghost Town history, visit the Lucy Lane Home, built in 1887. This was once Calico's Post Office, Courthouse and in 1920, the private home of Lucy and John Lane. Today, it's a museum where you can view historic photos and some of the Lane's old belongings, including an antique dresser, an iceless cooler from 1918, and a miner's carbide lamp. Despite its rustic appearance, Calico takes credit cards and there are several ATMs on site. You can even go camping for the night at Calico's campgrounds or bunkhouse. And Calico is pet friendly! Be sure to stay until dusk, when the park closes. You can grab a cold beer and burger at Calico's Old Miner's Cafe, then watch the stunning Mojave sunset. It's a magical way to end a day in the California desert. Klondike Alaska: A Rail History

01:29:30
For most people, railroads in Alaska and the Yukon are synonymous with the Alaska Railroad and the White Pass and Yukon Railroad whose passenger cars provide tourists with vistas of awe-inspiring terrain. That same terrain provided enormous challenges for early settlers of both territories. Railroads were an integral part of overcoming those challenges. Dozens of other railroads also laid track in Alaska, the Yukon, and northwest British Columbia and provided the means to transport supplies to settlements and to transport the region’s raw materials to outside markets. Klondike Alaska charts the history of many of those railroads. ©KUAC 2005 DVD's of this program are available for purchase at www.kuac.org.

(This Footage is a Small Part of the Bigger Video - To watch, visit http://www.YouTube.com/AboutColoradoTV) Turn Your Watch Back 100 Years! As a true preservation of Colorado's western past, Ghost Town Museum is a fun and historic look back at kind of old west town that used to dot this region during the late1800's and early 1900's "An Authentic Ghost Town" Selected by Mobile Travel Guide and Family Circle Magazine as one of the fifty-five special attraction of America. See the USA Travel Edition Recognition of Merit. Explore the boardwalk connecting the Blacksmith's shop, Saloon, General and Merchants of main street, with the Livery Stable, and Victorian Home. Each is filled with thousands of fascinating artifacts.

Old Sacramento - Things to Do in Sacramento

03:03
SUBSCRIBE! http://tinyurl.com/p2fveuj Veronica Hill of California Travel Tips offers a guided tour of Old Sacramento State Historic Park in Sacramento, CA. Established in 1849, the Old Sacramento district was formed as eager miners, bankers and businessmen arrived for California's Gold Rush. Today, there are 53 historic Spanish-style buildings to explore, and many have been faithfully restored. Old Sacramento attractions include the 1851 Big Four House, named for the founders of the First Transcontinental Railroad; and the 1853 B. F. Hastings Building, which once housed the Pony Express terminal and California's Supreme Court. During Sacramento's boom years, miners and pioneers flocked to the Eagle Theatre, which was established in 1849. This was the first permanent theater in California, and is rumored to be haunted by its former owner. Set on 28 acres and roughly eight city blocks, Old Sacramento is packed with activities. You can tour Sacramento by electric bicycle or horse and carriage, explore the Sacramento Schoolhouse Museum, or hop aboard the California State Railroad Museum Sacramento Southern Railroad for a 40-minute train ride. Old Sacramento was the terminus of the Transcontinental Railroad and the last stop on the Pony Express. At 2nd and J streets, you'll find the Pony Express Monument, which commemorates the 1,900-mile mail route from Missouri to Sacramento. Another monument honors Theodore Judah, the engineer who helped design the first Transcontinental Railroad. In 1862, a record-breaking rainstorm flooded Sacramento, causing the city to raise the streets up to 14 feet by the 1870s. Underground Tours are offered through the Sacramento History Museum, where you can explore the legends that lurk beneath the city sidewalks; or you can check out Pioneer Park, which offers a glimpse at the lower levels of the city. For a unique overnight, hang your hat at The Delta King, which is docked on the Sacramento River waterfront. This 1920s riverboat cruised between San Francisco and Sacramento until the 1940s and is one of the most unique and charming hotels in Sacramento. In 1982, the Delta King was restored to the tune of $9 million, and now boasts modern hotel rooms, a theater, wine school and two charming Old Sacramento restaurants. One thing to remember — most of Old Town is metered parking, so you'll need some change to park. Change machines are located on almost every city block. Eyam - Peak District Villages

02:22
http://www.peakdistrictonline.co.uk Village Guide Eyam - The village of Eyam (pronounced Eem) which sits snugly in relative isolation deep in the heart of the Peak District surrounded by a rugged landscape of limestone hills and dales and sheltered from the north by the dominating prominence of Eyam Edge, is perhaps the most well documented and most visited of all Derbyshire's villages. It's inhabitants are justifiably proud of their village and it's place in history for Eyam is known famously as the "Plague Village' - and thousands of visitors flock here every year from all over the world, fascinated by the valiant story of sacrifice which the village has to tell. The story begins in September 1665 when a contaminated parcel of cloth from London was delivered to the lodgings of travelling tailor George Viccars. Within three days Viccars was dead and the Bubonic Plague, which was decimating London's vast population, began to spread through the village. Over half the population fled, including Squire Bradshaw and his family, but around 350 remained in the village trusting to God and providence. In an attempt to stop the spread of the disease to other villages, the rector William Mompesson aided by his Duckmanton-born Puritan colleague Thomas Stanley, called upon the remaining villagers to impose a self-regulated quarantine and the people agreed to what for many of them would become a death sentence. Leadville Home Tour pt.3

03:09
At 10,152 feet, it's the United State's highest incorporated city. In addition to the rich mining history, the unique, creative, artistic paint schemes on the Victorian houses and other distinctive house designs create an eclectic array in this small town. Leadville was home to H.A.W. Tabor, who became almost as famous for leaving his wife and marrying a younger woman as for discovering one of the richest silver strikes in the state. His second wife, Baby Doe Tabor, became the stuff of legends — there's even an opera about her. Leadville was a very influential boomtown — it was almost named as Colorado's capital city. Well-preserved, Leadville has 70-square city blocks of Victorian buildings, all part of a designated National Historic Landmark District, along with 20-square miles of a preserved mining district. More than 50 buildings date back to the 1870s, including the Tabor Opera House. Leadville is located in the geographic center of Colorado, on U.S. Hwy. 24, part of the Top of the Rockies Scenic and Historic Byway. The town's paved Mineral Belt Trail offers year-round recreation for bikers, hikers, snowshoers and cross-country skiers. In winter, head out to Ski Cooper, a great and affordable family ski area; in summer, catch a ride on the Leadville, Colorado & Southern Railroad excursion. And don't miss the National Mining Hall of Fame and Museum, a truly fascinating look at the powerful industry and all the metals that helped build the state. Just 20 miles from the town of Leadville at the base of Independence Pass is the historic Twin Lakes area, where you'll find world-class fishing and some of Colorado's most spectacular lake and peak scenery. Twin Lakes is close to the trailhead of Mount Elbert and the renowned Interlaken Hotel historical site. It's a true small-town American West experience.

He and his band had a camp near here. Winnemucca, loosely translated, means "one moccasin." The chief's daughter, Sarah Winnemucca, was an advocate for education and fair treatment of the Paiute and Shoshone tribes in the area. Their family all learned to speak English, and Sarah worked as an interpreter, scout and messenger for the United States Army during the Bannock War of 1878. In 1883 Sarah Winnemucca published the first autobiography written by a Native American woman,[3] based on hundreds of lectures she'd given in the Northeast and mid-Atlantic. It has been described as "one of the most enduring ethno-historical books written by an American Indian." On September 16, 1868, the Central Pacific Railroad reached Winnemucca, and was officially opened on October 1 of that year. It was on the First Transcontinental Railroad. It was part of the transcontinental line. Basque immigrants worked as sheep-herders starting in the mid-19th century. In honor of this heritage, Winnemucca hosts an annual Basque Festival. On September 19, 1900, Butch Cassidy's gang robbed the First National Bank of Winnemucca of $32,640. Winnemucca's brothel district, while smaller now than in the 1980s, is known as "The Line" or "The Ring Circle", based on the layout of the street where the brothels are located.[citation needed] Sex workers in the town must register their vehicles with the local police. According to a billboard along State Route 140 (the "Winnemucca to the Sea Highway"), Winnemucca styles itself "The City of Paved Streets". Winnemucca is home to the Buckaroo Hall of Fame and Heritage Museum. It is also the headquarters of the Flawedcast Network. Chinatown In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Winnemucca had a vibrant Chinatown. The Chinese originally came to the area as workers on the transcontinental Central Pacific Railroad, which reached Winnemucca in 1868. Some remained or returned to settle. During the 1890s, around 400 Chinese formed a community in the town. Among their prominent buildings was the Joss House on Baud Street, a place of worship and celebration. In 1911 the community was visited by Sun Yat-Sen, later to become Chinese president. He was on a fund-raising tour of the United States to help the Xinhai Revolution.[6] The Joss House, the last structure associated with Chinatown, was demolished on March 8, 1955, by order of the Winnemucca City Council. Places to see in ( Dortmund - Germany )

03:42
Places to see in ( Dortmund - Germany ) Dortmund is a city in Germany’s North Rhine-Westphalia region. It's known for its Westfalen Stadium, home to the Borussia soccer team. Nearby Westfalen Park is marked by the Florian Tower, with its observation platform. The Dortmund U-Tower is topped by a huge letter U and houses Museum Ostwall’s contemporary art exhibits. Rombergpark botanical garden has local trees and greenhouses with cacti and tropical plants. Football (soccer) is a major Dortmund passion. Borussia Dortmund, the city’s Bundesliga (premier league) team, has won the national championships an impressive eight times. So it's actually quite appropriate that Dortmund was chosen as the site of the German Football Museum, which opened in 2015. Other attractions include several treasure-filled churches and high-calibre art museums. As the largest city in the Ruhrgebiet, Dortmund once built its prosperity on coal, steel and beer. These days, the mines are closed and the steel mills quiet, with more zeitgeist-compatible high-tech industries having taken their place. Only the breweries are going as strong as ever, churning out oceans of beer and ale, much of it for export. The city popping up first when people think of the Ruhr valley and that's no surprise. Being the largest Ruhr City, it is also the third largest by population after Cologne and Duesseldorf and the geographical center of the State North Rhine-Westphalia . Worldwide the City is foremost know for Beer (pale export/lager beer called Dortmunder) and the famous sports club "Ballspielverein Borussia 09", Borussia Dortmund or BVB fort short. However, the city is so much more than the reputation (Football, Beer and Industry) and has itself no need to shy away from the Cities on the Rhine. And yes, the city is no classy beauty and rough at first glance, though pretty honest, adorable and cordially at the second. Founded around 882, Dortmund became an Imperial Free City. Throughout the 13th to 14th centuries, it was the "chief city" of the Rhine, Westphalia, the Netherlands Circle of the Hanseatic League. After the Thirty Years' War the city was destroyed and decreased in significance until the onset of industrialization. The city then became one of Germany's most important coal, steel and beer centres. Dortmund acquired the nickname Stahlstadt ("Steel City") in the 19th century, when it became the world center of steel production. Consequently the city was one of the most heavily bombed cities in Germany during World War II. The devastating bombing raids of 12 March 1945 destroyed 98% of buildings in the inner city center. This bombing raids with more than 1,110 aircraft was a record to a single target in World war II.The region has adapted since the collapse of its century long steel and coal industries and shifted to high technology biomedical technology, micro systems technology and also services. A lot to see in Dortmund such as : Westfalenpark Botanischer Garten Rombergpark Emscher Dortmund Zoo German Football Museum Zollern II/IV Colliery Hengsteysee St. Reinold's Church, Dortmund Hohensyburg Dortmund U-Tower Museum für Kunst und Kulturgeschichte Museum Ostwall Dortmund Christmas Market LWL-Museum für Archäologie DASA Working World Exhibition Gysenbergpark Seepark Lünen Revierpark Wischlingen Hardenstein Castle LWL Industry Museum Mine Nachtigall Borusseum LWL Industrial Museum Zollern Marienkirche, Dortmund Schloss Strünkede Kokerei Hansa Brauerei-Museum Dortmund Museum "Hawk's Tower" Berger memorial Burg Hörde Steinwache Cappenberg Castle mine mont Cenis Beversee Halde Lothringen Halde Großes Holz Emscherquellhof Hoesch Park Streichelzoo und Wildgehege Hohenstein Witten Zeche Waltrop Wildgehege Grutholz Hallerey Erin Park Schlebuscher Erbstollen Europabrunnen Solebad Wischlingen Schloss Schwansbell Zeche Theresia Spielbank Hohensyburg ( Dortmund - Germany ) is well know as a tourist destination because of the variety of places you can enjoy while you are visiting Dortmund . Lanterns @ the Chatham Railroad Museum

03:08
We're talking about some lanterns at the museum which are located behind me on the shelf. They are all different types. The one on the left is a battery powered lantern which is what they called an "Inspector's Lantern." It could be carried along at night to inspect wheels and so forth on cars to make sure they were ok and safe to use. The one next to it is a bigger version of the same thing. Moving over again is a battery powered similar one. Now the two next are kerosene powered and they have red globes in them. Red to railroads means the same thing to cars—it means "stop." They used these when they had to tell a train to stop at night ; they would light those and then go on to the track letting the train know it was to stop. The next black one is a battery powered lantern, but next to it is a clear globe kerosene lantern. It could be used for a variety of purposes including simple illumination walking along the train at night, but it could also be used for signaling. By moving the light in different directions meaning different things: up and down and across or in circles. The railroad employees would know that means something like stop, slow down, etc. Next to it on the right is a battery powered clear lantern used for the same purposes as the clear kerosene lantern. Next to it is an interesting one—it's battery powered and blue. What that is for is for any time a train or engine is being worked on they would "blue flag it." Daytime would just be a flag but at night they would use a light like this. That meant don't dare move this because someone is working on it and could be hurt or even killed. Moving a blue flagged item was grounds for firing immediately. Right now I'm holding a different type of inspector's lantern but this one is kerosene and the black would project the light forward and you could use this at night to see where you were walking. This last lamp is also an inspector's lamp but it is a carbide lamp. You put granule carbide in the bottom and it has a tank on top where you put water and the water dripping on the carbide produces a settling gas. You light these just like you would a kerosene lamp but this one produces a very bright flame just the same as the carbide lights miners used to use on their caps. This one is probably even brighter because of the reflector. Anyway, this was just an overview of some of the lanterns we have at the Chatham Railroad Museum. **Brought to you by the Chatham Area Public Library District
Building That Looks Like Chinese Coin Completes Construction

01:27
A controversial upright circular building designed to resemble an ancient Chinese jade disc but popularly known as the "flashy rich people's circle" was recently completed in China's southern, Guangdong province. The 33-stories-tall Guangzhou Circle Building, which features a 47-metre-wide hole in the middle, is becoming a landmark of Guangzhou city, despite its location in the middle of a developing suburb some 40 minutes away from the city's central business district. Architect Joseph di Pasquale has said the hole is key to the structure because the empty centre would evoke an emotional response from its viewers. The yellow building also forms a figure-eight with its reflection on the Pearl River, suggesting the Chinese lucky number eight. The squares lined between the two facades of the building are also a reference to the geometrical impossibility of "squaring the circle," or putting a circle inside a square with the same area, according to di Pasquale. He added the squares between the circles suggest perfection. John Ma, the China manager of architecture firm A.M. Progetti, said di Pasquale drew inspiration from seeing a jade disc at a museum in Guangzhou, and he watched as the Italian architect drew the first impression of the building over a meal with his family. Ma stressed the building's roundness symbolizes harmony and completion in Chinese culture. "A jade disc isn't just beautiful, it also represents power, wealth and fantasy in traditional Chinese culture. It's an expression of people's good wishes," he said. The building will house China's largest plastics trading floor, the Guangdong Plastics Exchange, where 300 billion yuan's (US$49.5 billion) worth of plastic raw materials and goods are traded annually. "As we know, Guangzhou is the south gate of China. Our building is south gate's south gate. It's a landmark of the south gate (of China). Whoever comes to Guangzhou through the city's new highways in the south will definitely see Guangzhou Circle Building. It is a landmark of Guangzhou's new era. It represents a city's determination and strength in becoming a centre of world trade," Ma said. Plastics and chemical firm Hongdaxingye Group Co. Ltd initially poured 100 million yuan (US$16.5 million) into the iconic building and its surrounding warehouses and dormitories. The company spokesperson said it does not have a final pricetag of the five-year-project. Although construction of the building was officially completed on December 16, workers continued renovating its interior and the entrance area. Hongdaxingye's spokesperson would not estimate an official open date for the public. Even so, some local residents made the trip from the city centre to take a look at the newest icon in town. "I think he (the architect) is very brave. He made something that other people did not have the courage to make. It's a circular building, which is really unique in Guangzhou," said architecture student, Ash Sze, 18. Chinese netizens have lashed out at the building, calling it a crass symbol of wealth and nicknamed it "Tuhao Circle" or "Copper Coin Building." "It's quite unusual. I'm quite intrigued to see a building with a circular hole in the middle. Personally, I think it's for the flashy rich people," said one unidentified resident. Hongdaxingye Group, which funded the building, hosted a naming competition for the building earlier this year. In September, it gave the unidentified winner, who came up with the name "Guangzhou Circle", 100,000 yuan (US$16,500).
