Inside a Cursed Appalachian Mining Town

25:20
In the late 1800s, traveling preacher Robert Sheffey cursed the town of Ivanhoe, Virginia, after witnessing what one female resident describes as “houses of ill repute, fighting, drunkenness, and a rejection of his ministry by the townspeople.” Legend has it that Sheffey condemned the sinful town to sink into the earth and be consumed by the pits of hell. “Whether you believe in it or not, after that happened, we lost everything,” says the same Ivanhoe resident in this short documentary. “We have nothing.” Today, Ivanhoe is even plagued by sinkholes—multiple houses have disappeared entirely into the earth. Beckley Exhibition Coal Mine - West Virginia

05:58
Today we traveled due East to West Virginia. Here we stopped to tour the Beckley Exhibition Coal Mine in Beckley, WV. This was a very active coal mine back at the turn of the century and it’s now owned by the county to preserve the Coal Miners way of life! While there, we took a train ride deep into the Coal Mine. Much to my surprise, there was water dripping in everywhere, and in some places, the tracks for the train were completely covered! Originally, the mine was only 28” high, just enough to get the coal out, but enlarged for the tour train to get through! Despite being mildly claustrophobic, the trip thru the mine was cool (56F) but not overly scary! After the mine tour, we walked around the Old Coal Town and the Homestead Town. The tour guide thru the Homestead Town enlightened us as to where many sayings came from. This ranged from a machine called a Weasel that popped when a yard of yarn was reached…coining the term ‘Pop goes the Weasel’. Another was the use of corn cobs as toilet paper…coining the term ‘Rough as a Cob’. Another was the bed filled with corn husks suspended by ropes…coining ‘Sleep tight and don’t let the Bed bugs Bite’. Exploring an Abandoned Ghost Town In West Virginia!

07:44
Join me today as I explore an abandoned ghost town in West Virginia. I saw several creepy abandoned houses but was only able to explore one because I was short for time. This house had absolutely nothing left in it, as if was as if the Grinch stole Christmas from this house. There was no artifacts left in this house. During this video, I was also caught exploring this place by a local. I never saw the local, but my partner talked to him and the local said that it was fine if we stayed, though we did feel guilty staying. Coal mining in America's heartland | DW Documentary

42:26
West Virginia, USA - under its wild mountain idyll hides the "black hell": A labyrinth of dark tunnels - hard life in a coal mine. [Online until: 15 August 2019] "Wild, wonderful West Virginia” - that’s how the small state nestled in the Appalachian Mountains bills itself. This documentary reports on the daily struggle facing local coal miners hoping for help from Donald Trump; a sheriff combating the opioid epidemic that has already claimed thousands of lives; and a Cherokee environmental activist whose efforts have earned her intimidation and threats. The whistle of a locomotive at the front of an old coal train, quiet winding roads, and hardly a highway to be found - that’s still the image that many have of West Virginia today. But beneath the forest-covered mountains lies a labyrinth of tunnels just one meter high, in which miners still spend their entire working days toiling in the dark on their hands and knees. The camera team accompanies a traditional coal mining family as they go about their day. Together with the family’s two sons, Scott and Steven Lockhart, the crew ventures into the mine. Conversations with the miners reveal why people who had been lifelong Democratic Party supporters are suddenly placing their hopes for the future in Donald Trump. But the documentary also ventures beyond the coal mines to uncover the lesser-known sides of this Appalachian state - from snake-handling Pentecostal churches to the bluegrass and mountain ballads of Alan Cathead Johnston. We also speak with Sheriff Martin West, who sued the country’s three biggest pharmaceutical makers for their role in the opioid epidemic that has swept the region. And we meet another person who has decided to fight back: Maria Gunnoe, a young Cherokee activist who has dared to take on the coal barons that are ravaging the beautiful mountains of West Virginia. _______ DW Documentary gives you knowledge beyond the headlines. The Coal Town System

02:38
West Virginia coal operators built small, company-owned towns for their miners to live in. The coal towns were almost always unincorporated; there were no elected officials, no independent police forces. Owners hired private detective agencies to watch over their workforce. Company towns were also untethered from the free market competition owners usually championed. "The Mine Wars" premieres January 26, 2016 on American Experience PBS.

Centralia Burning Ghost Town - Pennsylvania USA

04:26
Centralia, Pennsylvania was nearly entirely evacuated following a coal mine fire, burning beneath the town since 1962. Centralia’s fire started in 1962, when residents turned an old strip mine into a dump, and setting the rubbish alight. The fire spread through an unsealed opening to the underground coal mines, igniting a seam of coal, and the fire has been burning to this day. In 1992, Pennsylvania condemned the town and claimed it under eminent domain in an attempt for force the remaining residents out. Some sued, and were allowed to stay. A section of State Route 61 was abandoned after it began to buckle and crumble from the underground fire. The fire stretches 12km, and burns underneath an area of 15 square kilometres, 300 feet below ground, authorities say the fire could burn for another 250 years. The town now mostly attracts tourists who visit an abandoned highway, where many profanities and obscene pictures are spray painted onto it, over time the highway has earned the nickname Graffiti Highway. Centralia is rumored to have inspired Silent Hill. 48 Vintage Photos of Life in Depression era Coal Mining Town Scott's Run, West Virginia, 1937

08:27
The coaling industry, in comparison to the boom of the 1920s, had basically collapsed by 1932. Already suffering, the industry could not sustain the economic downturn brought about by the Stock Market Crash of 1929. Residents of Scotts Run not only suffered from unemployment, but also from ethnic and racial prejudice and limited educational opportunities. The rampant poverty in Scotts Run attracted the attention of Protestant missionaries and the American Friends Service Committee in 1931. Later in 1933, the Roosevelt administration sent relief workers. Scotts Run became America’s image for the bleakness of the Great Depression. One writer for Atlantic Monthly declared that Scotts Run was “the damndest cesspool of human misery I have ever seen in America.” Although the suffering at Scotts Run was probably no different than in other coal hollows of Appalachia, it garnered national attention because of its accessibility to photographers, reporters, social workers, and government officials through automobile and railroad. First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt also brought national attention to the Run. Roosevelt first toured the mine camps of the area in 1933, and returned several times, forging long-term relationships. Following the first lady were media outlets and famous photographers such as Walker Evans, Marion Post Wolcott, and Ben Shahn. Eleanor Roosevelt’s involvement culminated in the relocation of a number of families at the resettlement community of Arthurdale in nearby Preston County. Local relief efforts also existed. The Scotts Run Settlement House, in existence since 1922, provided a large amount of assistance. Another example was Morgantown's First Presbyterian Church’s establishment of a missionary project for Scotts Run, which opened The Shack, a community center which eventually was used to start a co-op for supplemental farming. The 1930s marked a steady decline in industrial work in Scotts Run. Many of the residents relocated, some to Arthurdale, and many of the younger male residents served in the armed forces during World War II and did not return to the area upon the war’s end. National Research Project In 1936–37, documentary photographer Lewis Hine created photo studies of 14 American industrial communities, including Scotts Run, for the National Research Project of the Works Progress Administration.

Kaymoor, also called Kay Moor, WV was a coal camp that operated from 1899 to 1962. The town was actually built in two sections, Kaymoor Top and Kaymore Bottom. Most of the remains of Kaymoor that can be seen today are from Kaymoor Bottom. In 1960, most of Kaymoor Bottom was destroyed in a fire, and the mine was closed a couple years later. The abandoned remains of the town are now owned by the National Park Service. Kaymoor is an abandoned coal town in the New River Gorge. Nature will reclaim anything if given a chance. Oxyana

01:18:06
Tucked in the Appalachian mountains of Southern West Virginia, Oceana, is a small, once thriving coal-mining town that has fallen victim to the fast spreading scourge of prescription painkiller Oxycontin. As the coal industry slowly declined and times got tough, a black market for the drug sprung up and along with it a rash of prostitution, theft and murder. Soon its own residents had nicknamed the town Oxyana and it began to live up to its reputation as abuse, addiction and overdoses became commonplace. Oxyana is a harrowing front line account of a community in the grips of an epidemic, told through the voices of the addicts, the dealers and all those affected. It is a haunting glimpse into an American nightmare unfolding before our eyes, a cautionary tale told with raw and unflinching honesty. Mr. P. Explores... Nuttallburg, WVA - Abandoned Mining Ghost Town (Fayetteville, WVA)

28:31
In this episode of Mr. P. Explores, we drive down a treacherous gravel path for ten miles, down into the New River Gorge near Fayetteville, West Virginia in search of an abandoned mining town, a ghost town called Nuttallburg. Once a thriving coal mining town, the operation was begun by John Nuttall in 1870 along the future route of the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad that would run through the gorge. In 1873 Nuttall had built almost 100 houses, with 80 coke ovens, a variety of mine structures and a coal tipple on a railroad siding. Flat land by the river was dedicated to railroad and industrial use, leaving houses to seek perches on the hillsides. The town was racially segregated with white workers on the west side of Short Creek and black workers on the east side and between the railroad and the river. Because development stretched along both banks of the river, a pedestrian suspension bridge was built across the river by the Roebling Bridge Company in 1899. For nearly 80 years, the mine and town thrived, until the coal petered out. After that, most of the frame structures in Nuttallburg succumbed to weather or were salvaged for building materials. The National Park Service acquired the town, mining complex and surrounding area from the Nuttall Estate in 1998 and incorporated it into New River Gorge National River. We went in and went looking for whatever was left. Some amazing things came out of the search, despite the dangerous descent on a steep one-lane gravel "road" down the side of the New River Gorge. Even though there was absolutely no phone signal and no way out but back up the way we came, the trip was well worth it! Enjoy the adventure and check out what remains of Nuttallburg! At one time, Thurmond had upwards of 20 passenger trains made a stop in their depot per day (not counting the coal trains that passed by). It is still in use as a train station for Amtrak but is their second lowest-used stop (just ahead of Sanderson, Texas). This video shows the drive into town down the lonesome backroads of West Virginia up until I got stopped by a coal train.

How mountaintop mining affects life and landscape in West Virginia

09:25
Deep layers of underground coal are all but gone in West Virginia after 200 years of relentless mining, leaving thinner seams of coal on top of the state's beautiful mountains. But surface mining carries a huge cost: nothing less than mountains themselves. Science correspondent Miles O’Brien reports on how the Appalachian landscape is being fundamentally and irrevocably changed.
