Fine gold recovered from Yukon placer jig tailings using a shaker table

02:04
Placer miners that run tens or hundreds of yards per hour through their sluices often use a jig as their first tool for recovering the gold from the sluice concentrates. We had another Klondike miner bring some jig tailings (waste material) to our shop to see if we could extract any more values. These miners have been using their jig tailings for road topping for 25 years, but will now “mine” that material and process it over our shaker table to recover the gold their jig missed. Most likely, every larger placer operation has similar values that can be recovered with an MBMMLLC fine-gold shaker table. GSA Urban Mining Project

02:25
This may just look like a warehouse full of old electronics, but the General Services Administration, the Environmental Protection Agency and Electronics Recycling Incorporated see something more, "urban mining". ERI CEO John Shegerian oversees this urban mining process, which is the recovery of precious and rare earth metals and other valuable materials from used electronics such as computers, monitors, televisions and cell phones. GSA and the EPA are partnering with electronics recycling companies, like ERI, in this "urban mining effort" to encourage e-stewardship and to help stimulate the local economy. Old electronics are brought to the E-waste facility, torn apart, processed and then reassembled into a new item. Just as John with ERI shows us with his iPad2. This aluminum eventually goes through our facility, after it gets recycled, and it goes to ALCOA, our partner, and it ends up on the back of this iPad2. And that's what we call, urban mining.. GSA is a big volume buyer of electronics, spending $85 billion on electronics annually, $14 billion of that in IT equipment alone. This makes GSA's cradle to grave approach, to buy green and recycle green, imperative. Sue Damour, the GSA Rocky Mountain Regional Administrator, explains that e-waste recycling is key. to helping GSA work toward it's goal of becoming a Zero Environmental Footprint agency. The Federal Government in our mind, leads by example and this is the perfect way to do it. And we want to support job growth, not only here in Colorado, but in the other locations that ERI has in the high tech economy as we move into the future. Jim Martin from the EPA also shares enthusiasm about urban mining and the opportunity to create green jobs that will have a positive economic impact. This graph shows you another great reason for doing this, we can create jobs, we can create good jobs for all kinds of people. Long-term permanent jobs, recycling, reusing and replacing our electronics. A beacon of hope in a down economy. Colorado has been a mining state for more than 150 years, and I think, Jim martin, with EPA will agree with me this is the best mining we have ever done.

The Golden Hour | Metal Detecting A Mining Area With A Coin Spill

58:08
A hunt in a mining area with a coin spill and other surprises... I discovered a few ("shallow surface") mining activities in this area. Previous traces found in those woods are connecting it to the 19-20th century time period. I'm not sure about the extracted material (it wasn't gold, that's for sure). I didn't had a specific spot in mind. My plan was to reach a certain location, evaluate the terrain and follow my intuition. This is what works best for me. I could start directly at my "destination point", or on my way. The second option sounded much more exciting. Because I already hunted parts of this terrain before (and I wasn't the only one), the expectations were pretty low. I tried to recall previous spots and look a little bit "between". The way to the location of my choice was (as expected) "frustrating". My pouch filled slowly with more and more trash. As I crossed a path, a signal appeared and a strange looking object popped up. It looked very old, was it Roman?... Could it be a Fibula?... It was right on the edge of a path. I can't say for sure if it was its "original" location. When the path was renewed (or made), the bulldozer could have uncovered it somewhere else (from a deeper layer) and moved it x meters to the place where I found it. It's just a speculation... I marked the GPS position, but somehow this wasn't playing into my plan. My mission today was to track down workers from 19-20th century, so I went on... My expectations were pretty low. Workers who were hired to extract "stones" (or whatever they contained) had probably the lowest "status". Poor people with empty pockets, not surrounded by many fancy items. Something like a pocket watch would probably be a luxury back in the day. Finding anything would be a success. That is exactly what makes metal detecting for me exciting. It's the tracking part and the reward during and after a good hunt. When I found the first coin (a "10 Pfennig" from late 1800, early 1900), I started looking for more (which was against the common sense for reasons explained above). But the key is to know where to stop and where not to waste time. After the second coin, everything was clear... My expectations exceeded quickly a few coins later. It looks like I stepped right into a "coin spill", once again... I really like coin spills. The ground at this location was partially highly mineralized. The Deus had its difficulties. I had to swing slow(er), investigate some whisper sounds and change directions. When I came to the conclusion, that the spill probably is not extending to the "right" side anymore, I decided to try another (a little bit higher elevated) spot behind a few logs. Right at the moment, when I was about to walk over the logs and place my coil on the other side, a very faint whisper sound (for just a millisecond) appeared. You can spot it in the video, but you have to know what to hear for. I moved the coil instantly to the source of the sound and located a target. Because of the shallow depth of the object and a trail behind the logs, my conclusion was, that it will (probably) be modern trash. I moved the target together and some leaves with my shoe, to discover the biggest surprise. What is better than a coin spill in the woods? That's right - gold! It's not because of the item, it's of course the "rarity" of the material, especially in places like this. I was hoping, it will happen sooner (I found my last gold during summer I believe), but it was just not meant to be. It was the first time with the Deus HF coil. Every time I took this coil with me, I thought: "Oh no, I won't find any gold today" :D. I'm glad this is now over... The coin spill during the golden hour continued. Some coins were from the 1800/1900's, some from the 20's and 40's. It was (in my opinion) a good hunt with very good results. I hope, you enjoyed this hunt with me. Thanks for watching, have a great day or evening. Manufacturing in space could save life on Earth | James Orsulak | TEDxMileHigh

13:51
You care about the future of our planet. You traded in your gas-guzzling SUV for a Prius and your Keurig for a Coffee Maker -- and if enough of us do that, we’ll save the Earth, right? Well, we are dangerously close to collapsing our own ecosystem and we are running out of time. In this persuasive talk, James Orsulak argues that the only way to really make a difference is to look up. James Orsulak serves as the Director of Business Development at Planetary Resources, an asteroid mining company that has embarked on the world’s first commercial deep space exploration. The company focuses on technologies such as rocket propellant, water for life support functions, and construction materials sourced from asteroids. Previously, James spent a decade developing industrial-scale fueling stations on Earth. He is an avid gardener who lives in Denver with his amazing wife, 2-year-old twins and a rambunctious Goldendoodle named Waffles. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx

Tossed Out: Food Waste in America

28:46
Food waste is the single-largest source of waste in municipal landfills. According to the EPA, 35 billion pounds of food were thrown away in 2011. As it decomposes in landfills, the waste releases methane and other greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. Meanwhile, 1 in 7 Americans struggles with hunger and the world wonders how to address the challenge of feeding 9 billion people by 2050. Exhibiting DYNASET HPW DUST on excavator

00:46
DYNASET HPW DUST High Pressure Dust Suppression System is the most advanced technology for saving environment from dust emissions. Using dust suppression at demolition, mining, crushing, material handling, recycling, waste management, quarrying, etc. work sites enhances work efficiency and safety. It makes the air significantly clearer resulting better visibility and safer breathing. The system can be used effectively in practically all machine operated work, where dust emission is considerable. In urban areas dust control is essential to avoid soiling of surroundings and dusty air. The system is based on the powerful Dynaset HPW power washer which is powered by the carrier machine's hydraulics. High pressure water mist is sprayed directly to treated area through special nozzles. The nozzles are installed to the attachment and additionally on the machine's boom. High pressure is atomizing the water to microscopic water drops. The weight of the water bounded dust particle increases dramatically which makes it to fall down. On the other hand the size of a water drop is so tiny that the dust particle doesn't become wet enough to cause muddiness.

Denver Water Retirees Blow Whistle on Toxic Dumping, Asbestos Exposures

05:58
Denver Water retirees, who together represent over a century of service to the largest municipal water agency in Colorado, come forward to reveal a number of unregulated disposal sites where they were ordered to dump and crush asbestos-based pipes and other toxic materials, and demand justice for their exposures. The agency is unregulated by OSHA, and workers have no protection. They come forward to also warn the public of disposal sites that are now being redeveloped, and where there may be public health risks, as well as additional worker exposures.

Choosing The Right Size Roll Off Dumpster In Davenport, Iowa 6 Cubic Yard Dumpster Quad City, Il Area 10’ long, 5’ high, 5’ wide The 6 cubic yard roll off dumpster is perfect for DeWitt, Iowa and those small residential clean-ups or bathroom remodels in Bettendorf, Iowa. The 6 cubic yard dumpster is small enough to fit in a truck accessible parking area. This small dumpster can fit where larger dumpsters can’t, making it a favorite of homeowners. Here are some examples of where a 6 yard dumpster might be of use: Roofing shingle tear-off up to 10 squares Albany, Illinois Small clean-outs at home or business Aledo, Illinois Bathroom remodel Alpha, Il Any job where space for dumpster is insufficient for larger dumpsters Atkinson, Il 10 Cubic Yard Dumpster Davenport, Iowa 12’ long, 3’ high, 8’ wide The 10 cubic yard dumpster is often used by roofers and contractors in Silvis, Illinoiswith heavy waste material such as roofing shingles, concrete, asphalt, etc. The 10 yarder fits in most residential driveways and alleyways where sufficient space exists for the delivery trucks to maneuver. The following are examples of where the 10 yarder might be used: * Roofing shingle tear-off up to 20 squares in Milan, illinois Small residential clean-outs Annawan, Illinois Small deck removal Gerneseo, Illinois Kitchen remodel Barstow, Il 20 Cubic Yard Dumpster in Davenport, Iowa 20’ long, 4‘high 8’ wide The 20 yarder is a favorite of both homeowners and homebuilders in Calamus, Ia as it contains twice the amount of waste in Cambridge, Il the smaller dumpsters will hold. Heavy waste materials such as shingles, dirt, brick, concrete will overload, by weight, our large dumpsters. So if you have large quantities of these dense waste materials, you’ll need to order a smaller 10 yard dumpster. Also, dumpsters can be up to 20 feet in length and are delivered by large vehicles which require plenty of space to maneuver. So you’ll need to find a hard, level, truck accessible area which is free from overhead obstructions(wires, tree branches, etc) for your dumpster to be placed. Sturdy driveways, gravel areas, parking lots, and city streets(where ordinances allow) are all possible dumpster locations. But if your space is limited, you might want to order a shorter6 or 10 yard dumpster. 12:22
http://gsa.gov/r8 The Denver Federal Center (DFC) has a long and colorful past dating back to World War II. This video tells the historic story of a cattle ranch turned ammunition plant turned thriving federal office complex. A specific focus in this story is on new projects that are setting the framework for an exciting 20-plus year master plan for the 65-acre campus. Through this project, GSA sold land that is helping provide more than 2,000 new jobs to the community as well as plans for new public transportation. Throughout the video, a common theme of sustainability emerges that demonstrates the commitment of GSA's vision of the DFC becoming the most sustainable campus by the year 2020.

To do this H2O Environmental utilized a special boat that is able to operate in less than 8 inches of water. Our customers – railroads, pipeline operators, trucking companies and facilities owners/operators in power generation, petroleum and chemical industry– rely on the H2O Hazmat Team to respond quickly and expertly to emergency situations related to the transport and storage of hazardous materials, and to handle the industrial cleaning and hazardous material disposition for their fixed facilities. H2O Environmental, Inc., is a full-service emergency spill response, waste remediation, transport, industrial cleaning and disposal organization. With a commitment to continuous education and training in the key disciplines of hazardous materials management and response, our company has built expertise in dealing with the entire range of operational and emergency situations for our customers. H2O Environmental was founded by John Bradley in 1996. A veteran of the U. S. Marine Corps, John initially saw a growing need for a statewide environmental services company providing a full range of services for the state of Nevada. The company quickly expanded to two operational bases – Las Vegas and Reno – in our first few years of operation. After over a decade of developing and refining our operational practices to provide a complete range of services to our customers, we began opening new operational bases in 2007 with the strategy to cover the geographic area in the heart of the Western United States that now comprises our service territory. Our philosophy is to bring the best possible expertise, supported by a superior equipment set, to each situation. Our mission is to be the best performer for our customers in the markets we serve. We will deliver the best value – the lowest total cost in time, energy, money and lost opportunity – for our customers. We speak authentically when we give you our promise of what we see we can do in a particular situation. We use company owned equipment that’s under our control and maintained to our rigorous standards. We continuously develop and train our staff to have them be the strongest team in the industry in knowledge and expertise.

22 Reasons to fear radiation from the Farallon Islands.

10:43
22 Reasons To Fear the Worst from Fukushima & the Farallon Islands. Harvey Wasserman | [This is the first in a two part series] UC Berkeley has been dumping radioactive waste at the Farallon Islands for the last 33 years. We demand UCB clean up the radioactive waste from the ocean. It is a lot easier to clean up the waste from the Farallons than it is from Fukushima. Fukushima's missing melted cores and radioactive gushers continue to fester in secret. Japan's harsh dictatorial censorship has been matched by a global corporate media blackout aimed—successfully—at keeping Fukushima out of the public eye. But that doesn't keep the actual radiation out of our ecosystem, our markets ... or our bodies. Speculation on the ultimate impact ranges from the utterly harmless to the intensely apocalyptic . But the basic reality is simple: for seven decades, government Bomb factories and privately-owned reactors have spewed massive quantities of unmonitored radiation into the biosphere. The impacts of these emissions on human and ecological health are unknown primarily because the nuclear industry has resolutely refused to study them. Indeed, the official presumption has always been that showing proof of damage from nuclear Bomb tests and commercial reactors falls to the victims, not the perpetrators. And that in any case, the industry will be held virtually harmless. This "see no evil, pay no damages" mindset dates from the Bombing of Hiroshima to Fukushima to the disaster coming next ... which could be happening as you read this. Here are 50 preliminary reasons why this radioactive legacy demands we prepare for the worst for our oceans, our planet, our economy ... ourselves. 1. At Hiroshima and Nagasaki (1945), the U.S. military initially denied that there was any radioactive fallout, or that it could do any damage. Despite an absence of meaningful data, the victims (including a group of U.S. prisoners of war) and their supporters were officially "discredited" and scorned. 2. Likewise, when Nobel-winners Linus Pauling and Andre Sakharov correctly warned of a massive global death toll from atmospheric Bomb testing, they were dismissed with official contempt ... until they won in the court of public opinion. 3. During and after the Bomb Tests (1946-63), downwinders in the South Pacific and American west, along with thousands of U.S. "atomic vets," were told their radiation-induced health problems were imaginary ... until they proved utterly irrefutable. 4. When British Dr. Alice Stewart proved (1956) that even tiny x-ray doses to pregnant mothers could double childhood leukemia rates, she was assaulted with 30 years of heavily funded abuse from the nuclear and medical establishments. 5. But Stewart's findings proved tragically accurate, and helped set in stone the medical health physics consensus that there is no "safe dose" of radiation ... and that pregnant women should not be x-rayed, or exposed to equivalent radiation. 6. More than 400 commercial power reactors have been injected into our ecosphere with no meaningful data to measure their potential health and environmental impacts, and no systematic global data base has been established or maintained. 7. "Acceptable dose" standards for commercial reactors were conjured from faulty A-Bomb studiesbegun five years after Hiroshima, and at Fukushima and elsewhere have been continually made more lax to save the industry money. 8. Bomb/reactor fallout delivers alpha and beta particle emitters that enter the body and do long-term damage, but which industry backers often wrongly equate with less lethal external gamma/x-ray doses from flying in airplanes or living in Denver. 9. By refusing to compile long-term emission assessments, the industry systematically hides health impacts at Three Mile Island (TMI), Chernobyl, Fukushima, etc., forcing victims to rely on isolated independent studies which it automatically deems "discredited." 10. Human health damage has been amply suffered in radium watch dial painting, Bomb production, uranium mining/milling/enrichment, waste management and other radioactive work, despite decades of relentless industry denial. 11. When Dr. Ernest Sternglass, who had worked with Albert Einstein, warned that reactor emissions were harming people, thousands of copies of his Low-Level Radiation (1971)mysteriously disappeared from their primary warehouse. Harvey Wasserman's next piece is on how Fukushima threatens our human freedom and material survival. He edits www.nukefree.org, and wrote Solartopia! Our Green-Powered Earth.

Waste Part 3 - Interview Rick Winterhalter & Greg Sampson Episode 1302

05:26
Rick Winterhalter of the Association of Oregon Recyclers defines waste for us. Producers should be held accountable for generating waste. Recycling is key to returning waste back into the stream of commerce. Greg Sampson from CRT processing explains the e-cycling law and stresses the importance of keeping used electronics out of the waste stream. 1 ton of recycled electronics offsets 17 tons of mining and processing of raw materials.

Japan's Pollution Experience: Island of Waste Part 2 of 4

05:39
Japan gained material wealth after rapid economic growth which lifted the people's living standards. Especially in cities, mass production and consumption led to generation of massive volumes of waste. Japan first handled its waste by burying it in the mountains or using it to reclaim lands offshore. However, this method soon reached its limitations. Industrial waste produced from factories and construction sites had nowhere to go except to less populated countryside and remote islands. These became waste mountains causing much pollution. By the time illegal dumping was exposed, so much waste had accumulated. Garbage pollution is difficult to tackle because it comes from numerous sources both domestic and industrial. Victims and victimizer are not visible to each other, which makes the situation more complex and hard to resolve. This film features Japanese citizens who questioned their waste legislation and voluntarily started recycling campaign. It recalls the challenges that Nagoya city faced when it withdrew a new reclamation plan, and looks at a typical illegal dumping site in Teshima island, Kagawa prefecture. Japan's waste problems are far from over. The film ends with the key question: How can production and consumption minimise waste generation in the future?

Colorado Experience: Hydro Power

27:20
In 1891, due to a lack of timber fuel and the challenge of steep mountain passes, all mining operations in Telluride were in danger of being shut down. Cue L.L. Nunn. This Colorado pioneer financed Ames Hydroelectric Generating Plant, the first in the world to generate alternating current electric power for industrial application. Thanks to this historic milestone, Telluride’s Gold King Mine remained open and hydroelectric plants soon popped up across the United States and the world. Flowable Fill Solutions

02:11
Ozinga's flowable fill can be described as "engineered fill dirt" and is versatile both in form and in function. After we pour the liquid material into a trench or hole, it quickly hardens into a durable fill material capable of carrying heavier loads than most comparable compacted soils or granular fills. The unique material fills voids found everywhere from utility trenches, bridge supports and retaining walls, to tunnels, sewers and basements. The ability to completely fill voids without compaction saves time and labor normally required to compact other fill materials. The fragile pipes and other utilities that pass through the trenches are often damaged when conventional methods of compaction are used. These problems do not occur while using flowable fill because it does not settle after it hardens and the pavement placed over flowable fill does not suffer settlement failures. Flowable fill's flexibility also extends to its composition, earning its reputation as an economical and environmentally friendly material. Flowable fill provides a valuable use for a variety of recycled industrial waste products. Fly ash, a by-product of coal-fired power plants, is just one of many waste products successfully used to mix Ozinga's flowable fill. So while flowable fill keeps the trenches full, it also helps keep the landfills empty. This "engineered dirt" saves money for taxpayers, as it requires a reduced amount of energy and resources both for its installation and for its upkeep. Our roadways and streets last longer because flowable fill eliminates the need to repeatedly repair the same street cuts again and again.

Kids Learn Engineering Through Lego Robotics Competition - Denver News Story - KMGH Denver.avi

01:55
Free After-School Program Provides Access, Training For Low-Income Students After two months of experimenting, budding builders from Kepner Middle School and University Park Elementary put the final touches on robots they've created using Lego blocks. On Nov. 20, they will match mind and machine against teams from all over the state in a FIRST Lego League qualifying competition. It's an opportunity made possible by a free, nonprofit program called Open World Learning. "Open World Learning is an after-school program that uses computer labs that are otherwise empty in low-income areas of Denver," said Dean Abrams, CEO of Open World Learning. "Our goal is to develop leadership and ignite a love of learning in the kids that we serve." Working with angles and distance, students program the robots to navigate obstacles and move targets. "It's a lot of troubleshooting. It's a lot of problem solving," said Leandrea Walter, OWL's senior site leader at Kepner Middle School. "It kind of feels good because you completed a mission and, like, you get to move on to another one," said eighth-grader Alonzo. It's a technology and engineering lesson disguised as fun and games, and instructors said the experience can instill confidence and skills that carry over to students' education. "I had dyslexia, and my dyslexia is now getting better, and I'm getting a lot more comfortable with myself," said fifth-grader Giselle. "What we are all about is helping kids understand that they can succeed despite what appear to be challenges in their life," Abrams said. "It opens their eyes. It opens their mind. And it opens their hearts to learning." The Open World Learning team will compete in a qualifying tournament Nov. 20 at the Colorado School of Mines. Nearly 250 teams statewide are competing for slots at the state finals to be held Dec. 10 at the University of Colorado Denver. Copyright 2011 by TheDenverChannel.com. All rights reserved. River in Colorado reopens weeks after contamination

02:33
Officials in the U.S. state of Colorado say the Animas River which was turned orange by three million gallons of contaminated water two weeks ago is slowly returning to normal. The river has been reopened for recreation and other uses. The pollutants came from one of thousands of abandoned mines in the U.S. West, which contain highly toxic materials. CCTV's Hendrik Sybrandy filed this report from Denver.

Don't Sell the Landfill

03:22
All the stuff we throw away... where is "away"? How to responsibly take care of our waste. See Also: Top Ten Reasons the Republic Service Contract is a Bad Deal................................... 1. Net Financial Loser. The cost of operating the system will be $500 million over 20 years, but the trash flow revenue alone will earn $600 million. So if we keep the system ours, not only will we have more than enough money to reopen and cap the landfill, but we will have at least $100 million dollars in addition, to use on other county programs that need the money. And well earn even more revenue from energy production, recycling and compost programs by keeping the program public. 2. No Appraisal You have to know what you got before you try to sell it. With everything from trash flow, the recycled materials revenue, to using green-waste methane for energy, we really havent established what its worth! 3. Liability Even though Republic will eventually be responsible for the Central landfill, this plan doesnt include the environmental liabilities of the Countys other old landfills at Annapolis, Guerneville, Occidental, Healdsburg, Airport, Roblar, and Sonoma, leaving the liability for those sites to the County and cities. 4. Guaranteed Rate Increases Republic would get a rate increase every year no matter what. Whereas keeping it public would mean we get to adjust the rates according to whatever our future needs become perhaps even lowering the rate when we consume less and conserve better. 5. $100 Million Leaves Local Economy Conservative estimates show that at least a $100 million dollar profit would be forever lost to an Arizona corporation over the course of 20 years; thats money we need to keep circulating right here, in our economy. 6. Increases Greenhouse Gas Emissions Republic has no real facility to separate organics, like food and yard waste, which makes methane when it rots, a gas 20 times more powerful than the greenhouse gas CO2. We owe our children more than that. 7. Discourages Conservation No matter how much we reduce our waste, this plan guarantees Republic that each year they will be paid at least 70% of what we paid the first year. Even the county has an incentive for us to waste Republic pays them a $9 royalty for every ton we throw out, a sort of hidden tax taken as part of our monthly disposal rates. 8. Gives Away Power Plant Weve got a landfill gas-fueled powerplant big enough to power 7,000 homes. In a time of peak oil and energy depletion, this plan takes home-grown energy away from the public and drops it into a private corporations hands. 9. Loss of Recycling Revenue In 2006, we made over $100,000 from our recycling facilities. This plan would bring that number to zero. 10. Sets Us Back 25 Years This plan takes the rights and responsibilities of our community resource and hands it over to an entity only concerned with profit. Not only would we lose money, but this plan tosses aside our obligations and opportunities to help the environment and ourselves. http://supervisors.sonoma-county.org/
