Tin Mining in Jos (100 yrs of neglect)

10:42
Tin Mining in Jos started way back in1902 and by the mid 1940s the British government formally entered tin exploration and mining in the region making it the number one foreign export from Nigeria. However, the discovery of oil in the mid 1950s and the subsequent shift in emphasis from tin mining left present day Plateau State with the huge challenge posed by degradation and devastation, with over 4,000 abandoned mining ponds dotting the state, neglected and have continually posed a serious threat to the environment and the inhabitants. Quite a lot of damages have been meted on the land, particularly around the Jos area of Plateau State.

Tin ore mining changing the face of Ntungamo

04:17
Tucked away somewhere in a remote part of Ruhaama County in Ntungamo district are deposits of tin ore. Now, while local residents are making some money out of the mines, it seems their safety has been left to chance and even the district authorities are not keen on what goes on in the mines since they don’t get any proceeds from there. Inside Story - Nigeria's illegal miners

23:24
Subscribe to our channel http://bit.ly/AJSubscribe At least 160 people have died in Northern Nigeria, and this number is likely to increase as villagers continue to expose themselves to lead poisoning from illegal gold mining. The discovery of a gold deposit triggered a "gold rush" among impoverished farmers who dug up rocks by hand, unaware that the ore contained dangerously high concentrations of lead. Nigerian authorities have asked for assistance from various international agencies, including the World Health Organisation, to help contain the outbreak. But the Nigerian government has not stepped in to curb the illegal mining. It is reported that at least 111 of those killed were children, many of them under the age of five. Inside Story asks: Just why do these people run this risk? How does it impact the environment? And what can governments do to stop illegal mining? At Al Jazeera English, we focus on people and events that affect people's lives. We bring topics to light that often go under-reported, listening to all sides of the story and giving a 'voice to the voiceless.' This “Forgotten EV” Metal Will Outperform Peers

04:16
Tin has been living in copper’s shadows when it comes to metals used for electric vehicles, but Russell Clark, CEO of Kasbah Resources, said that tin is just as vital as other base metals. “People talk about cars and windmills and all those things, but they all need to be joined, and that’s why the copper story is so strong, but you need tin to join it all together in the form of solder,” Clark told Kitco News on the sidelines of the Noosa Mining & Exploration Investment Conference. Clark noted that 50% of tin usage is in solar panels and related technologies. The tin market is around 350,000 tons a year, according to Clark. _________________________________________________________________ Kitco News is the world’s #1 source of metals market information. Exploring new ground in a old Cornish tin mine - Part 1

06:33
We take a look down a mine in the mid Cornwall area that is only accessable via a 90ft mine shaft. This mine floods during the Winter months but dries out in the Summer, the lower levels are covered with ochre due to the flooding and never dries out, makes exploring so much fun. This video we look mostly at the lower level, it is a maze of passages and chambers, mostly crawling around as the hight in there is about 3 to 4ft. I am planning a second part for this video, it's even more harder to film the upper workings as it's such a crawl and maze. - Please drop by my new facebook page and give me a like: https://www.facebook.com/CornishMineExplorer/ - Important Note: We don't post the real names of the mines featured in our videos, to protect the sites and to stop others with less experience putting themselves in danger. If you know this place, please don't mention it by name or location. Our team consists of ex miners, cavers and mine rescue, every trip is taken with caution and callouts made to other members of where we are underground. Please do not put yourself at risk or others by entering these abandonded mines.

Exposing The Inhumane Conditions Of Burkina Faso's Gold Mines

29:23
Gold Dust: Under Blaise Compaore's leadership, Burkina Faso's unregulated gold rush has had a devastating effect on mining conditions. This report digs deep into the industry, exposing the corruption beneath Compaore's ruling. Millions of people - including children as young as fourteen - mine in an unregulated industry for a few golden grams of hope. Marcel toils underground to support his family - but without the glittering rewards promised. “We all have hope, we hope to earn” he says, but "they rob us here...They treat the miner like an animal." 17-year old Soumaele has been mining for two years. His thin body can go to even deeper than the older men, to places where the air is impossible to breathe and the tunnels are likely to collapse. Gold promises a great deal, but in an anarchic industry, teacher Soungalo Hema fears for the future of children like Soumaele: "You try and save them", she says, "but a lot of the time it’s in vain. I ask myself 'what will happen to all of us?'" A powerful report filmed before the amnesty but with many participants sceptical the world remains as pertinent as ever. A fisherman pulls an empty net from waters that have sustained his family for generations:“"Because of oil spillage we can’'t get fish to sustain ourselves, let alone to sell”." Despite the huge oil industry 90% of locals are unemployed. Frustration led many to fight, decimating Nigeria's oil output. Now policy is being scrutinised - senior officials question the lack of development in the Niger Delta; “The way the oil companies have acted thus far is a little irresponsible”. An amnesty was offered to militants willing to disarm. Some accepted but many were sceptical; “Amnesty will not disarm the Niger Delta. It will only quell it”. BOLIVIA: MINERS LAUNCH PROTEST AGAINST PLANS TO PRIVATISE TIN MINES

02:30
Natural Sound Bolivian miners and their families have launched a protest against government plans to privatise a lucrative tin mine. 25-hundred miners have occupied the Posokoni hill mine since Friday. Hundreds more have marched through the streets of Oruro, 260 kilometers (152 miles) from the capital, La Paz. Miners and their families chanted anti-government slogans through the streets of Oruro, Bolivia, on Saturday, demanding jobs at the lucrative Posokoni mine. The mine lies in the mineral rich Huanuni region which the government is planning to sell into foreign ownership. Wives and supporters donned helmets and took to the streets of the nearby town of Oruro in support of colleagues who have occupied the mine since Friday. Many criticised the government under President Gonzalo Sanchez de Lozada. An estimated 25-hundred miners staging the sit-in at Posokoni were unblocking shafts in order to gain access to the mineral deposits. Posokoni tin is rated among the best in the world and is therefore likely to attract much interest from foreign buyers. SOUNDBITE: (Spanish) "The present government is intending to give away our riches to different foreign companies, and we don't want that. What we want is that they give these riches to us so that we can work them." SUPERCAPTION: Eduardo Mollinedo, member of miners' cooperative Miners in Bolivia work in cooperatives which are allocated specific mining rights by the state. Many of these mines have been exhausted and can no longer sustain the livelihoods of those people who work them. Without profitable land to mine, many families would be left with nothing. SOUNDBITE: (Spanish) "There are about 2,500 of us occupying, so that they allocate areas to us here in this place, Posokoni hill, where we get the tin for our livelihood." SUPER CAPTION: Eduardo Mollinedo, member of miners' cooperative The demonstration comes at a fragile time for President Lozada. Bolivia enters a general election on Sunday and Lozada is seeking a further term as president. Many Bolivians do not support his privatisation plans and there is public sympathy for the miners. Some of those living close to Posokoni have offered miners, who've come to protest from other regions, a roof over their heads while the demonstration continues. EIA: Reflections from Communities in Myanmar (English VO)

09:59
A Myanmar language voice-over version of this video is available here: https://youtu.be/-KwwUALvN2o Environmental Impact Assessments, or EIAs can be a crucial tool for communities who face harmful development projects. ERI uses this video in grassroots trainings to show how communities can use the public consultations during an EIA process to make their voices heard. The video focuses on the story of the Heinda tin mine in Myanmar. Since 2008, pollution from the Heinda mine has contaminated water supplies in nearby villages, with villagers reporting health problems and damage to their farmlands. The company operating the Heinda mine, Myanmar Pongpipat Company Ltd (MPC), was ordered to conduct an EIA. But as villagers in the affected communities saw that EIA laws were not being followed, they refused to participate in public consultations for the company, preventing the EIA from moving forward. Communities across the Mekong and elsewhere can look to the Heinda case to see one method of influencing the course of development projects in their area. This video is for other civil society groups or communities who are working to support public participation in EIA processes. “We observed that the company used English language and technical environmental engineering terms that could not be understood by the community. When they did this, people in the community stood up and complained that they cannot accept it like this.” - Aye Mon Thu, Dawei Probono Lawyers Network “Public participation is central to the meaning of an EIA. If there is no public participation, the whole process of an EIA is meaningless.” - Than Than Aye, ERI Myanmar Legal Coordinator “I want to see that there are no losses or impacts for both villagers and company. If the villagers are impacted, the company must take responsibility for that.” - Daw Khin San, Myaung Pyo Villager Help us caption & translate this video! https://amara.org/v/iHgH/
Save The Dredge Campaign "Tanjung Tualang Dredge"

03:43
The dredge was one of the main workhorses of the tin mining industry in Malaysia. It was an engineering masterpiece which had brought wealth and prosperity to our nation. Out of a total of 3.33 million tonnes of tin-in-concentrate produced in Malaysia from 1929 to 2009, 1.32 million tonnes or 40 percent were from dredging. At today's tin price of US$30,000 per tonne this amount of tin would be worth almost US$40 billion.
