Nanaimo's Coal Mining History

http://www.ctvvancouverisland.ca http://www.facebook.com/ctvvi NANAIMO - Evidence of Vancouver Island's rich history is all around us, but you may not know that it is also beneath our feet and that's especially true in Nanaimo. The first European settlers were drawn to the region by black gold. They built the Harbour City on the coal mining industry. CTV's Bruce Williams takes us back in time to show us what it was like to toil in those underground mines. Follow Bruce Williams on Twitter: http://www.twitter.com/CTVNewsBruce

BlackTrackTour of old coal mining and railroad sites....

04:34
Vancouver Island author and historian Tom (T.W.) Paterson talks about the semi-annual heritage walking tour he's hosted for several years. The Black Track Tour explores old coal mining and railroad sites in South Wellington, just south of Nanaimo, one of Vancounver Island's major coal producing regions in times past. Tom donates all ticket sales to Friends of Morden Mine to assist in their aim to preserve the 100 year old head frame and tipple still standing at Morden Colliery Historic Provincial Park.

Built in 1888, Cumberland, BC was a bustling coal town with many productive mines and workers who came from all around the world. The last mine closed in 1966, but the hills around the village still contain hints and ruins of its lively beginnings. Created by Fox&Bee Studio on Vancouver Island. Abandoned Mountainside Resort. Adventure #38

05:27
Finally made a trip over to Vancouver Island to cross some Adventure spots off the list. This is Deertrail Resort, the ruins of one mans great big dream. This was supposed to be a five star luxury resort on the side of a mountain but a lack of funding brought the plans to an end. The location is absolutely unbelievable and this resort would have been amazing if it had gone through to fruition.

Giants Of The Quayside - A Coaling Sidelight (1933)

02:46
Netherlands. "At Rotterdam they are found - huge steel structures - unloading and loading the thousands of tons of coal for the Continent." Moving shot of the docks at Rotterdam. Various cranes and boats are seen. "And so easily can these monsters be moved into position." Closer shots of one of the cranes. Parts of the machinery move - buckets transport coal. "Then the work commences. Five tons of coal are lifted at a time." M/S of one of the buckets being lifted from a hold - it is full of coal. M/S of the ship from which the coal is being transported. It is the "Tosto" of Newcastle. Low angle shot of the cargo being moved around then dropped. "Here the coal is weighed, and when the ten ton mark is reached, it is automatically emptied from the bottom into railway trucks." We see the coal being dropped into a truck. "All day and every day these giants continue their work of feeding the Continental industries with coal." L/S of the docks with boats beside the large cargo cranes. The camera moves - presumably on board a boat. Was an item in Eve's Film Review issue number 623. FILM ID:976.22 A VIDEO FROM BRITISH PATHÉ. EXPLORE OUR ONLINE CHANNEL, BRITISH PATHÉ TV. Blue Grouse Mine on Vancouver island!

30:41
Exploring a large abandoned mine with special guests on Vancouver island called the Blue Grouse! The Blue Grouse mine is located on the south side of Cowichan Lake, 4.8 kilometres northwest of Honeymoon Bay. Mineralized outcrops on the property were first located between 1900 and 1910. The mine was abandoned in 1960, reportedly leaving some reserves. The workings were rehabilitated in 1979 by Corrie Copper Ltd. Copper mineralization of mineable grade was reported to be present at the 1100 level. The workings were backfilled sometime between 1987 and 1989. The Sunnyside workings (092C 108) are located 800 metres to the south. The Cowichan Lake area is at the eastern end of the Cowichan uplift, one of a series of major geanticlines on Vancouver Island. The area is underlain by pyroclastic, sedimentary and volcanic rocks of the Paleozoic Sicker Group, the Mississippian to Permian Buttle Lake Group, the Upper Triassic Vancouver Group and the Lower Jurassic Bonanza Group which have been intruded by Triassic gabbros (informally named Mount Hall) and Early to Middle Jurassic Island Plutonic Suite rocks, and overlapped by Upper Cretaceous sediments of the Nanaimo Group. The Vancouver Group comprises pillow and massive basalt, volcaniclastics, tuffs and breccias of the Karmutsen Formation; siltstone, argillite and micrite of the Quatsino Formation and limestone, tuff and argillite of the Parson Bay Formation. The property is underlain by Karmutsen Formation volcanics and Parson Bay Formation sediments. Sediments of the Nanaimo Group and volcanics of the Bonanza Group occur near the property. These are cut by numerous Jurassic feldspar and feldspar-pyroxene porphyry dykes related to the Bonanza Group. The orebodies occur in limestone and tuffaceous members which are folded in a series of overturned folds. The beds are displaced by a series of thrust faults which have a general east strike and dips of 10 to 20 degrees south. Garnet-epidote-actinolite skarns are developed in limy tuff, limy sediments and limestone, apparently interbedded with the upper portions of Karmutsen Formation basalts. Mineralization was present in ten small tabular sulphide zones and consisted of chalcopyrite, pyrrhotite, pyrite and lesser magnetite and sphalerite. The main orebody, hosted in volcanic rocks, was the G-H. The ore consisted of a skarn zone which formed a southwest plunging pipe-like body extending from the surface to the 335 metre level. The mineralization comprised chalcopyrite, pyrite and pyrrhotite irregularly occurring as stringers and small masses. The orebody was displaced to the northeast, the top block moved 305 metres to the north and 46 to 61 metres to the east in relation to the lower block. The E ore body, 300 metres due south of the G-H, was a 3 to 4 metre wide tuffaceous horizon mineralized with pyrrhotite. The pyrrhotite almost completely replaced the bedded rock and was veined with small stringers and irregular masses of chalcopyrite and pyrite. Small grains of hematite were noted locally. The mine was in production from 1917 to 1919 and from 1956 to 1960. From 249,298 tonnes of rock, 6,814,623 kilograms of copper, 2,508,644 grams of silver and 218 grams of gold were produced. Exploration in 1989 located several gossanous zones in the southwest portion of the property. A 1-metre chip sample (109075) of intermediate tuff with copper staining from the BGN-4 site assayed 0.7 per cent copper and 0.043 gram per tonne gold (Assessment Report 19387). Sampling results ranged from 0.0007 to 1.1824 per cent copper and 0.001 to 0.043 gram per tonne gold (Assessment Report 19387). In 2002, Ber-Can Environmental Resources Inc. completed a program geochemical sampling of the Blue Grouse tailings and tailings ponds for the purpose of developing a proprietary process for the clean up of mine tailings and mill tailings.

Abandoned Power House in the Forest. Adventure #39

08:58
Our trip to Vancouver Island brought us to many unique, beautiful and abandoned places. The abandoned power house at Jordan River was definitely a highlight for me. Lost deep in the woods, you would never expect to find a large building hidden in and amongst the trees. This sight had a very post apocalyptic feel and it was an absolute blast to explore. The power house and surrounding town was abandoned because the dam was structurally compromised, causing a danger to the city below.

SECOND BOER WAR - WikiVidi Documentary

02:09:10
The Second Boer War was fought between the British Empire and two Boer states, the South African Republic and the Orange Free State, over the Empire's influence in South Africa. It is also known variously as the Boer War, Anglo-Boer War, South African War or Anglo-Boer South African War. Initial Boer attacks were successful, and though British reinforcements later reversed these, the war continued for years with Boer guerrilla warfare, until harsh British counter-measures brought them to terms. The war started with Britain overconfident and under-prepared. The Boers were very well armed and struck first, besieging Ladysmith, Kimberley, and Mafeking in early 1900, and winning important battles at Colenso, Magersfontein and Stormberg. Staggered, Britain brought in large numbers of soldiers and fought back. General Redvers Buller was replaced by Lord Roberts and Lord Kitchener. They relieved the three besieged cities, and invaded the two Boer republics in late 1900. Artifacts found near Hwy. 97 Okanagan - YouTube

01:20
Just my opinion but the Hwy. construction should have come to a halt. Yes there are archaeologists working to recover artifacts, but with the scale of the construction, I think some things are being lost for all time. Imagine that people lived here perhaps 6 to 10,000 years ago. It was a community and we should learn as much as possible about these people, not just in a rush move as not to get in the way of construction.

Chemainus Murals - Julia Askew, historical tour guide

04:02
There were 39 murals (maybe more now) painted on the walls of buildings which depict historic events or people from the town. We were toured around the town by none other than Julia Askew herself - although I did have my doubts as apparently Julia was born in 1871 and died in 1942. So she was either an imposter or a professional actress. Anyway here are only a few snippets of the tour showing some of the murals and some of the dialogue as we enjoyed Chemainus, BC

Nanaimo House the Homeless INITIATIVE

Implementing HEXIDOME Technology to develop sustainable and affordable housing for our homeless, the building of KINGDOM CAMPS and blueprint for disaster relief. Three days ago the Lord appeared to me in a dream. I saw His hands take the cutouts for the Hexidome technology and arrange them into a hexagonal ring covering many hundreds of acres. Each cutout was made up of a 144 acre MACRO Camp staffed with Holy Ghost filled believers fully set up to mass produce these portable shelter systems that the Lord has put into my hands. The Nanaimo House the Homeless INITIATIVE is a simple plan using the 1 Acre Micro Village that can accommodate up to 40 people. Each Hexidome has the capability to house 8 people or family for the long term.

Abandoned Mill - Courtenay - Vancouver Island

01:44
Headquarters, known as Fraserville briefly before being changed to Headquarters was a small community located on the banks of the Tsolumn River in Courtenay, BC. The town had just about everything you'd need back in the early 1900's. Everything from a post office, bunkhouse's, blacksmith shops, a hotel and restaurants could be found in the community along with the worker's homes. They also had shops and a round house for the locomotives that would work the logging rail line. The townsite of Headquarters started being built back in 1911 and it survived until the late 1950's. The saw mill was built between 1912-1913. Its been said that the mill never cut a board of wood. Some have said the government would allow them to cut a large area of wood as long as a saw mill was built. There was a recession in 1913 that also may have contributed to the mill not starting up and being abandoned. Below are some photos of the saw mill. There isn't much to be seen of it nowadays. There are a few items scattered around the bush though. What do you think? Was this actually built to be a saw mill or was this a different building built in Fraserville for another reason?

This is an audio version of the Wikipedia Article: Winston Churchill Listening is a more natural way of learning, when compared to reading. Written language only began at around 3200 BC, but spoken language has existed long ago. As Prime Minister, Churchill led Britain to victory in the Second World War. Churchill represented five constituencies during his career as Member of Parliament (MP). Ideologically an economic liberal and British imperialist, he began and ended his parliamentary career as a member of the Conservative Party, which he led from 1940 to 1955, but for twenty years from 1904 he was a prominent member of the Liberal Party. Of mixed English and American parentage, Churchill was born in Oxfordshire to an aristocratic family. Joining the British Army, he saw action in British India, the Anglo–Sudan War, and the Second Boer War, gaining fame as a war correspondent and writing books about his campaigns. Elected an MP in 1900, initially as a Conservative, he defected to the Liberals in 1904. In H. H. Asquith's Liberal government, Churchill served as President of the Board of Trade, Home Secretary, and First Lord of the Admiralty, championing prison reform and workers' social security. During the First World War, he oversaw the Gallipoli Campaign; after it proved a disaster, he resigned from government and served in the Royal Scots Fusiliers on the Western Front. In 1917 he returned to government under David Lloyd George as Minister of Munitions, and was subsequently Secretary of State for War, Secretary of State for Air, then Secretary of State for the Colonies. After two years out of Parliament, he served as Chancellor of the Exchequer in Stanley Baldwin's Conservative government, returning the pound sterling in 1925 to the gold standard at its pre-war parity, a move widely seen as creating deflationary pressure on the UK economy. Out of office during the 1930s, Churchill took the lead in calling for British rearmament to counter the growing threat from Nazi Germany. At the outbreak of the Second World War, he was re-appointed First Lord of the Admiralty. Following Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain's resignation in 1940, Churchill replaced him. Churchill oversaw British involvement in the Allied war effort, resulting in victory in 1945. His wartime leadership has been widely praised; however, several of his decisions have proved controversial. After the Conservatives' defeat in the 1945 general election, he became Leader of the Opposition. Amid the developing Cold War with the Soviet Union, he publicly warned of an "iron curtain" of Soviet influence in Europe and promoted European unity. He was elected prime minister in the 1951 election. His second term was preoccupied with foreign affairs, including the Malayan Emergency, Mau Mau Uprising, Korean War and a UK-backed Iranian coup. Domestically his government emphasised house-building and developed an atomic bomb. In declining health, Churchill resigned as prime minister in 1955, although he remained an MP until 1964. Upon his death in 1965, he was given a state funeral. Widely considered one of the 20th century's most significant figures, Churchill remains popular in the UK and Western world, where he is seen as a victorious wartime leader who played an important role in defending liberal democracy from the spread of fascism. Also praised as a social reformer and writer, among his many awards was the Nobel Prize in Literature. In more recent years however, his imperialist views and comments on race, as well as his sanctioning of human rights abuses in the suppression of anti-imperialist movements seeking independence from the British Empire, have generated considerable controversy.
