Bomb Squad Training: "Explosive Ordnance Disposal" (EOD) 1965 US Army; The Big Picture TV-666

more at http://quickfound.net/links/military_news_and_links.html "This film examines the dangers and uncertainties involved in the disposal of explosive devices of all kinds by military men. Scenes take the viewer from training in Indianhead, Maryland, where students were thoroughly schooled in explosives--what they were, what they were made of, and how they worked--to on-location ordnance disposal." "The Big Picture" episode TV-666 The Big Picture TV Series playlist: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL_hX5wLdhf_Jwfz5l_3NRAcCYURbOW2Fl Public domain film from the US National Archives, slightly cropped to remove uneven edges, with the aspect ratio corrected, and mild video noise reduction applied. The soundtrack was also processed with volume normalization, noise reduction, clipping reduction, and/or equalization (the resulting sound, though not perfect, is far less noisy than the original). http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bomb_disposal Bomb disposal is the process by which hazardous explosive devices are rendered safe. Bomb disposal is an all encompassing term to describe the separate, but interrelated functions in the military fields of Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) and Improvised Explosive Device Disposal (IEDD), and the public safety roles of Public Safety Bomb Disposal (PSBD) and the Bomb Squad. "Bomb disposal" does not encompass the remediation of soils polluted with explosive materials... Modern EOD Technicians across the world can trace their heritage to the Blitz, when the United Kingdom's cities were subjected to extensive bombing raids by Nazi Germany. In addition to conventional air raids, unexploded bombs (UXBs) took their toll on population and morale... The United States War Department felt the British Bomb Disposal experience could be a valuable asset, based on reports from U.S. Army, Navy, and Marine Corps observers at RAF Melksham in Wiltshire, England in 1940. The next year, the Office of Civilian Defense (OCD) and War Department both sponsored a bomb disposal program. After the attack on Pearl Harbor, the British sent instructors to Aberdeen Proving Ground, where the U.S. Army would inaugurate a formal bomb disposal school under the Ordnance Corps... US EOD covers both on and off base calls in the US unless there is a local PSBT or "Public Safety Bomb Technician" that can handle the bomb - ordnance should only be handled by the EOD experts. Also called a "Hazardous Devices Technician", PSBTs are usually members of a Police department, although there are teams formed by fire departments or emergency management agencies. To be certified, PSBTs must attend the joint U.S. Army-FBI Hazardous Devices School at Redstone Arsenal, Alabama which is modeled on the International IEDD Training school at The Army School of Ammunition, known as the Felix Centre. This school helps them to become knowledgeable in the detection, diagnosis and disposal of hazardous devices. They are further trained to collect evidence in hazardous devices, and present expert witness testimony in court on bombing cases. UXO Before bombing ranges can be re utilized for other purposes, these ranges must be cleared of all unexploded ordnance. This is usually performed by civilian specialists trained in the field, often with prior military service in explosive ordnance disposal. These technicians use specialized tools for subsurface examination of the sites. When munitions are found, they safely neutralize them and remove them from the site. Other (training, mining, fireworks) In addition to neutralizing munitions or bombs, conducting training and presenting evidence, EOD Technicians and Engineers also respond to other problems. They dispose of old or unstable explosives, such as ones used in quarrying or mining, as well as old or unstable fireworks and ammunition. They escort VIPs and dignitaries. They assist specialist police units, raid and entry teams with boobytrap detection and avoidance. Another function of an EOD Operator is the conducting of post-blast investigations. The EOD Operators' training and experience with bombs make them an integral part of any bombing investigation. Another part of an EOD operators job involves supporting the government intelligence units. This involves searching all places that the high ranking government officers or other protected dignitaries travel, stay or visit...

Blasting Cap!: DANGER 1957 Institute of Makers of Explosives

Safety & Accident Prevention playlist: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL_hX5wLdhf_IzJgm0Y9Apq-dV42HAgwl4 more at http://quickfound.net 'Shows the dangers to which children expose themselves when they play with blasting caps.' Reupload of a previously uploaded film with improved video & sound. Originally a public domain film from the Library of Congress Prelinger Archives, slightly cropped to remove uneven edges, with the aspect ratio corrected, and one-pass brightness-contrast-color correction & mild video noise reduction applied. The soundtrack was also processed with volume normalization, noise reduction, clipping reduction, and/or equalization (the resulting sound, though not perfect, is far less noisy than the original). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blasting_cap Wikipedia license: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ A blasting cap is a small sensitive primary explosive device generally used to detonate a larger, more powerful and less sensitive secondary explosive such as TNT, dynamite, or plastic explosive. Blasting caps come in a variety of types, including non-electric caps, electric caps, and fuse caps. They are used in commercial mining, excavation, and demolition. Electric types are set off by a short burst of current conducted from a blasting machine by a long wire to the cap to ensure safety. Traditional fuse caps have a fuse which is lit by a match. The need for blasting caps arises from sensitivity issues of an explosive compound. All explosive compounds require a certain amount of energy to detonate. If an explosive is too sensitive, it may go off unexpectedly, so most commercial explosives are formulated to be stable and safe to handle and will not explode if accidentally dropped, mishandled, or exposed to fire. However, such explosives (called secondary explosives) are hard to detonate intentionally as well, and require a small initiating explosion. A blasting cap contains an easy-to-ignite explosive that provides the initial activation energy to start a detonation in a more stable explosive. The blasting cap is stored separately and not inserted into the main explosive charge until just before use, keeping the main charge safe. Most blasting caps contain what is called a primary explosive, which is a high explosive compound that will explode from flame, heat or shock. A blasting cap may also contain a booster, another less sensitive but more energetic explosive that makes the cap more powerful, and thus more reliable for detonating secondary explosives. Explosives commonly used in blasting caps include mercury fulminate, lead azide, lead styphnate and tetryl. The recommended primary explosive is DDNP because it is nontoxic, easy to make and not too sensitive. Because they contain easy-to-detonate primary explosives, blasting caps are hazardous for untrained personnel to handle. They are sometimes not recognized as explosives due to their appearance, leading to injuries.

Underground Training Systems - Introduction to Underground Mining

02:59
Underground Training Systems (UTS) has been set up to offer courses in hardrock underground mining (Gold, Nickel, Copper, Diamonds and many other base metals, excluding coal). Each course has been developed using our company Core Values and Positive Tips for Safety in a Hazardous Workplace . All courses are presented by a consultant that has a W.A shift boss ticket and more than 15 years practical underground mining experience. This gives the course participants a unique opportunity to ask questions and receive experienced answers about all different aspects of mining life. The jobs are Australia wide and there are roughly 23,000 hard rock miners within the Australian industry. The W.A. the Mines Department has estimated that between 10%-15% of these workers leave the industry every year. That works out to be 2300 to 3450 people that leave the industry every year (for a number of reasons) that need to be replaced. These entry level positions are filled with new starters that are commonly referred to as Green . This is where UTS Introduction to Underground Mining course has given employers the opportunity to employ people that have the knowledge of how an underground mine works and the entry level skills that they will be required to be performed. This allows a UTS graduate to become a useful member of an underground crew in 4-7 days of being on site. Entry level jobs covered include dump truck operator, nipper, drillers offsider and service crew member . By completing Introduction to Underground Mining over three days you will have the knowledge for us to present your resume to the relevant mining companies for entry level positions as part of our Placement Program . This program has been designed to give you the best possible chance to "get your foot in the door" and helpful staff who will start the employment process once you enrol.

Science in 60 - Training the Explosives Experts

01:25
Military Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) technicians have a tough job. Their lives—and others’ lives too—depend on their knowledge of explosive materials and the correct procedures for identifying and dismantling homemade explosives. During the Advanced Homemade Explosives training course at Los Alamos National Laboratory, lab scientists use their expertise to teach EOD techs from the U.S. Air Force, Army, Marine Corps, and Navy how to recognize homemade explosives labs and the raw ingredients commonly used to make IEDs and other bombs. Techs also learn safety measures, get hands-on experience synthesizing the materials, and study the sensitivity and performance characteristics of those materials. This science and hands-on training is critical for keeping EOD techs safe and helping them save lives. THE BIG PICTURE shows that in addition to the physical ruin left in the wake of war, seeds for further destruction are oftentimes found which require trained military personnel capable of ferreting out these destructive seeds and removing them before the damage is done." From "Pictorial Report No. 7", "The Big Picture" episode TV-264 Originally a public domain film from the US National Archives, slightly cropped to remove uneven edges, with the aspect ratio corrected, and one-pass brightness-contrast-color correction & mild video noise reduction applied. The soundtrack was also processed with volume normalization, noise reduction, clipping reduction, and/or equalization (the resulting sound, though not perfect, is far less noisy than the original). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bomb_disposal Wikipedia license: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ Bomb disposal is the process by which hazardous explosive devices are rendered safe.
