ASMR Tumbled Stones (soft speaking, stone sounds, sorting)
Way back in the day, in my early teens, I had a "rock tumbler" (the "Tumble Stones" tumbler by Tapco). It was an entry-level tumbler, with a cheap motor and a loud plastic barrel. I had to run it in a back room near the garage to get the noise level low enough for people to sleep at night.
In the 1970's, craft hobbies were all the rage. Rock tumblers were often marketed as a way to make your own jewelry, and indeed, the refill kit I show in this video came with little metal parts to turn small polished stones into rings, necklaces and tie clips. But I never cared about that aspect of it. I fancied myself a geologist in training, and just liked rocks, plain and simple.
I only tumbled a couple of batches of stones, sadly. The process was not only a great exercise in patience (a month from start to finish), but also a great exercise in discovery. Smoothing and polishing a stone allowed me to "see" into it, as the new glassy surface revealed many vibrant and dynamic secrets, clues that spoke to how that stone came to be.
All these years later, I still have that yellow plastic barrel, filled with polished stones. Some of these are ones that I tumbled as a kid, while others have been collected by my kids on some of our family trips together. And all these years later, a polished stone still stops me in my tracks. I guess my inner child still can resist the urge to look through that polished window, to see what there is to see.
A few videos ago, we talked about the luxury of slowing down and allowing our tired brains to focus on one simple task for a little while. Trying to better follow my own advice, I spend a little time sorting these stones by color, and looking at them closely. I hope this has the same on you as it does on me.
If you're a fan of polished stones, I'd love it if you could comment below on any stones that you can identify. If you provide time stamps, then maybe I can eventually add an index for identifying all the stones in this video!
Thanks to Beth Darlington for this first cut at a stone list! If you have any refinements to make, let me know in the comments, and I'll add your inputs here:
