Mining under Chernobyl reactor unit #4

00:34
Heroic work of Ural miners under destroyed unit #4, mining shaft from unit #3 in order to create capsule for liquid nitrogen cooling device, which would prevent molten fuel from escaping concrete "containment" and contaminating ground waters. However, the device was not ever installed and the capsule was filled with concrete creating 2m thick plate. The molten fuel has never reached it. All of miners got high doses of radiation, especially at the entering into the shaft.

The 3 Forgotten Heroes Of The Chernobyl Disaster

04:53
The 3 forgotten heroes of the chernobyl disaster. This video honours 3 brave men who helped save thousands of lives. On the 26th of April 1986, the Chernobyl disaster occurred in the city of Chernobyl, Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant. The Chernobyl disaster was a nuclear accident that occurred when four nuclear reactors blew up due to workers mistakes. The accident was the largest radioactive discharge ever recorded and it caused radioactive material to be sent into the atmosphere for 10 days. The radiation spread for miles killing everyone in its path, but its official death toll is unaccounted for and ranges from a few to thousands, with the official Soviet death toll at 31 people from the disaster itself. More than 600,000 decontamination workers, also known as liquidators were sent into Chernobyl in an effort to help clean up and neutralize the nuclear radiation. Many people who were sent in at the start of the disaster died within a few weeks from contamination. Thank you for watching! Thanks to CO.AG for the background music!

WATCH HOW THE CLOSED DOWN REACTOR NUMBER GOT ALIVE FOR FEW SECONDS! Last special power plant visit was a blast! One of our visitors - former nuclear power plant director in Mochovce (Slovakia) Jozef Valach - got into a great professional discussion with the head of nuclear waste liquidation at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant and as a result, he turned on for us the control panels into testing mode. Woooow :-)

Russian/Nat The only operational reactor at Ukraine's Chernobyl nuclear power plant has gone back on line after the end of repairs which were delayed for nearly a month. Reactor number three at the station, where the world's worst nuclear accident occurred in 1986, had been under repair since it was shut down on December 15 last year. Chernobyl's reactor number three was shut down in December for repairs that were initially delayed because of energy shortages in the former Soviet republic. It was to have come back on line February 16, but the state nuclear energy company Energoatom said it needed more time to fix it. Repairs included safety upgrades and a check of the reactor's regular and emergency cooling systems, which had some 50 defects. Reactor number three is the only one remaining of four originally operating at the plant. SOUNDBITE: (Russian) "We will heat up the reactor to nominal power and if everything is fine at 1800 on March 6 reactor number three will be hooked up to the electricity grid." SUPER CAPTION: Andrei Shantsev,Reactor shift supervisor Reactor number four - which blew up 13 years ago, spewing radiation over large parts of Europe - has been covered in a protective concrete covering ever since. The other two reactors at Chernobyl were closed down in 1991 and 1996 respectively. Chernobyl has been riddled by controversy since the catastrophe in 1986. The concrete sarcophagus covering reactor number four has been the subject of apocalyptic predictions about its safety, with some experts predicting it could collapse causing disaster. Although the Ukrainian government has pledged to shut down Chernobyl completely by 2000, the severe energy crisis in the former Soviet republic puts the promise in doubt. Ukraine relies on its five nuclear power stations for 40 percent of its energy needs. Therefore atomic energy authorities in the country have lobbied hard for Chernobyl's remaining reactor to be repaired and put into operation again. SOUNDBITE: (Russian) "We received the permission of the administration body of atomic regulation for reactor number three to work in the electricity grid. Therefore after around 48 hours of work at nominal power, the reactor will hook up to the grid and will account for around three per cent of the energy output of Ukraine." SUPER CAPTION: Andrei Shantsev, Reactor shift supervisor Meanwhile, workers at the Chernobyl plant are continuing a protest action, which started on March 2. The protesters, who are demanding wage arrears, have set up a tent city in the town of Slavutich, where most of Chernobyl's personnel live. SOUNDBITE: (Russian) "Many workers are refusing to take rest after they have finished their shift and go to the town square to take part in the protest. Also they refuse to sleep and come to work having not rested. Of course, all that has a bad effect on the work of the station." SUPER CAPTION: Oleg Goloskopkov, Head of public relations, Chernobyl Nuclear Power Station The workers warn that disorder in the nuclear power industry could endanger the safety of the country's nuclear plants. The protests began when the government failed to heed nuclear energy workers' demands in similar demonstrations last summer. Last week, the government pledged 33 point three (M) million dollars to pay back wages, but never issued the actual order to pay. The workers have threatened to stage hunger strikes, reduce plants output and even hold a full-blown strike beginning March 22 if their demands are not met. Chernobyl Mysteries: The Elephant's Foot (aka "Medusa"... Pure chernobylite)

03:03
Chernobylite is a technogenic mineral, a crystalline zirconium silicate with high (up to 10%) content of uranium as a solid solution. It was discovered in the corium produced in the Chernobyl accident, a lava-like glassy material formed in a nuclear meltdown of a reactor core. Chernobylite is highly radioactive due to its high uranium content and contamination by fission products. Ukraine - Chernobyl reactor still leaking

01:13
T/I: 11:16:46 Twelve years after the Chernobyl nuclear accident the concrete sarcophogus covering the reactor is leaking and radioactive machinery is littered for kilometres around the plant. People living in the settlement of Polesskoye, within the 30km contaminated zone near Chernobyl, stubbornly refuse to leave their homes and continue to live and trade in the radioactive area. An internationally funded operation is still going on to clean up the power plant. The latest effort is financed by American-Canadian money and involves disinfecting building materials which were stockpiled near Chernobyl at the time of the nuclear accident so they can be re-used. Management at Chernobyl has constantly warned over the last year that the concrete sarcophogus built over the reactor is on the verge of collapsing due to countless cracks. 06. Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant full view of reactor 4 with the new sarcophagus under construction

00:41
On Saturday, April 26, 1986, a disaster occurred at reactor No. 4, which has been widely regarded as the worst accident in the history of nuclear power. As a result, reactor No. 4 was completely destroyed and has since been enclosed in a concrete and lead sarcophagus to prevent further escape of radioactivity. The remains of reactor unit 4 will remain radioactive for some time. It is likely that with no further decontamination work the gamma ray dosage at the site will return to background levels in about 300 years. However, most of the alpha emitters are longer lived, and the soil and many surfaces in and around the plant are likely to be contaminated with transuranic metals such as plutonium and americium. People will be able to live in the area for 24.000 years. In the video you can also see the top of the new sarcophagus (NSC). Originally announced in June 2003, a new steel containment structure named the New Safe Confinement (NSC) would be built to replace the aging and hastily-built sarcophagus that currently protects reactor unit 4. Though the project's development has been delayed several times, construction officially began in September 2010. The New Safe Confinement is financed by an international fund. The new sarcophagus is planned to be completed in 2015 and will be the biggest mobile structure ever created (can fit the statue of Liberty inside). Hopefully the old one will hold lickages until the new one is in place. Unfortunately on Tuesday 12 February 2013 a 600 m2 section of the roof of the turbine-building, adjacent to the sarcophagus, collapsed.

88,000 tons of radioactive waste – and nowhere to put it

07:39
The United States produces 2,200 tons of nuclear waste each year…and no one knows what to do with it. The federal government has long promised, but never delivered, a safe place for nuclear power plants to store their spent fuel. This means that radioactive waste is piling up all over the country. We visited one of the worst places where the waste is stuck: a beachside power plant uncomfortably close to both San Diego and Los Angeles. And we asked the people in charge of the waste there: what happens now? Excerpt from a documentary about men who had worked in the plant and returned a few years ago. I chose segments of the rarely seen control desk of Reactor 4, in other words, where the mess began. The numbers sprayed on the wall refer to the date (June 6, 1986-six weeks after the accident) and the radiation level. I removed the original audio and improvised a few sounds of my own.

Chernobyl +30--A Look from the Inside, with Lucas Hixson

01:23:42
In this installment in our #NuclearIsDirty series, we provide an inside view from nuclear field technician Lucas Hixson on the impacts of the 1986 Chernobyl disaster and the ongoing efforts to manage the site. Lucas recently traveled to Ukraine and spent ten days with people who work at the Chernobyl reactor site today, 30 years after the consequential release of radioactivity from this site began. He takes us from the moment the Unit 4 reactor failed on April 26, 1986, the aftermath, and the ongoing mitigation work, up to his own recent experiences living with today’s workers at the site of one of the largest man-made radioactive releases on the planet. Chernobyl today. Lucas shared his insights about the radiological impacts and consequences that could reframe our understanding of major reactor disasters. source video: #NuclearIsDirty: Chernobyl +30 -- A Look from the Inside, with Lucas Hixson https://youtu.be/EWlFCYLQl1c To download the slide presentation, click here. http://tinyurl.com/j94aaoh If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to contact NIRS. Canaries in the Uranium Mines ~ Abandoned US 1,500 Mine Crisis Calls For Cleanup Now!

01:39:16
Mar 29, 2016 - Nuclear power is dirty--from cradle to grave. At the beginning of the fuel chain, uranium mining, milling, processing and enrichment cause widespread environmental devastation and produces enormous quantities of radioactive and toxic waste. Nuclear reactor operation results in routine releases of dangerous radioactivity into our air and water, and, as shown at Chernobyl and Fukushima, major reactor accidents can make areas of our planet permanently uninhabitable. The radioactive waste generated by reactors is nearly instantly lethal, and will remain hazardous for millenia. And, to date, there is no scientifically-defensible, publicly-acceptable solution for radioactive waste storage. https://youtu.be/7H0-hHMF0EA Nuclear Power Is Dirty Campaign w/ NIRS #NuclearPowerIsDirty https://youtu.be/LBgDFdPRPfE 2016 03 25 15 01 Canaries in the Uranium Mine The Abandoned Uranium Mine Crisis and the Campaign tohttps://youtu.be/i8UNEy1vcqI This video is from March 25, 2016 NIRS webinar on widespread radioactive contamination around abandoned uranium mines across the U.S. & the campaign to force their clean-up.https://youtu.be/i8UNEy1vcqI Nuclear Information and Resource Service (NIRS) http://www.nirs.org/ Twitter: @NIRSNET Kakrapar plant leakage: All future atomic power expansion plans should be put on hold says former AERB chief http://tinyurl.com/zro46r3 Kakrapar Nuclear Plant Is Likely Undergoing A Loss-Of-Coolant Accident: Dr. A. Gopalakrishnan read article in full here: http://tinyurl.com/j64lb79 The Kakrapar Unit-1 PHWR Primary System Leakage Incident on March 11, 2016: The Kakrapar Unit-I nuclear reactor in Gujarat is undergoing a moderately large leakage of heavy water from its Primary Heat Transport (PHT) system since 9.00 AM on March 11,2016. Till 7.00 PM on March 12,2016 , the DAE officials have no clue as to where exactly the PHT leak is located and how big is the rate of irradiated heavy water that is leaking into the reactor containment . However, some reports indicate that the containment has been vented to the atmosphere at least once , if not more times , which I suspect indicates a tendency for pressure build up in that closed space due to release of hot heavy water and steam into the containment housing . If this is true, the leak is not small , but moderately large , and still continuing. No one confirms that any one has entered the containment (in protective clothing) for a quick physical assessment of the situation , perhaps it is not safe to do so because of the high radiationfields inside . When NPCIL officials state that the reactor cooling is maintained , I believe what they may be doing is to allow the heavy water or light water stored in the emergency cooling tanks to run once-through the system and continue to pour through the leak into the containment floor through the break . All this points to the likelihood that what Kakrapar Unit-1 is undergoing is a small Loss-of-Coolant Accident (LOCA) in progress. It is most likely that one or more pressure tubes (PT) in the reactor (which contain the fuel bundles) have cracked open , leaking hot primary system heavy-water coolant into the containment housing . The reactor cooling is said to be maintained which , in view of the PT breach , can only be by supply of heavy water or light water from the storage tanks of the emergency cooling systems . While it may perhaps ensure bulk coolant temperatures in the PHT system to be well under control , it could still mean fuel centreline temperatures in the channel which may have a breach could be quite high . The seriousness of the accident and the potential high risks to the plant and personnel in the near vicinity are yet to be assessed , because NPCIL and AERB do not yet know where the location of the leak is or how to initiate actions to stop it. They were waiting for a team of AERB Specialists to reach Kakrapar in the afternoon of March 12 th. (today) to jointly decide between AERB & NPCIL how to proceed from here on. This is therefore a potentially serious accident in progress - read article in full here: http://tinyurl.com/j64lb79 Japan Diary 2016, Fukushima+5, Part 6. “Dose” does not exist, only exposure http://safeenergy.org/ Nuclear Power and Climate: It's No Solution Don't Nuke the Climate! http://www.nirs.org/cop21/dontnukethe... Fukushima Reactor #1 is 9X Worse Than Chernobyl, Unit 3 is A MILLION Times Chernobyl

Streamed live on Nov 26, 2013 by BeautifulGirlByDana http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nyizUv3Bco8&feature=share Fukushima Reactor 1 is 9 x Chernobyl - Unit 3 is a Million X Chernobyl Will the last one out of Fukushima please turn off the 3 melted nuclear reactors . Excellent ! Chernobyl 3828 http://youtu.be/FfDa8tR25dk (THis was Great!) Published on Apr 21, 2012 Military people call such places "FRONTLINE", liquidators who worked at the Chornobyl nuclear station called it "ROOF COATING". It was the most contaminated, and therefore the most dangerous, place in the zone. The remains of the roof coating of the 4th reactor. The operation on decontaminating the roof lasted more than five months. We will tell about only two days. About the most important two days in the life of an explorer - dosimetrist Valeriy Starodumov. He participated in this operation until it was over. He himself came out to the roof and led people there. He himself planted the "victory banner" at the level of 75 meters, as the signal for the zone: the roof coating has been decontaminated! Now, 25 years later, Valeriy Starodumov comes back to the zone. Now Chernobyl is a tourist object. But not for him... DAY ONE On September 1, 1986 a German robot "Joker" broke down. With a lot of difficulties this robot was installed in the most dangerous zone "M". Local robots were unable to work there. High hopes were placed on "Joker". It was the last argument that people should not be used for decontamination. But the robot "sat down" on the graphite block and was stuck there. Our hero with two other subordinates came out to the roof coating into the zone of high radioactivity to pull off "the Fritz" with the help of winch. They managed to do this but... Fragment of the monologue: "It turned out that it was not just jammed track. Some idiot, trying to prove to the world that there can be no global catastrophes at the Soviet nuclear power stations, underrated by a factor of ten the radiation levels in the application. Pedantic Germans have programmed the robot in accordance with the order and "Joker" suddenly died. The electronic brains of "the Fritz' burned out. So my "heroic" escapade was a bust. And also we got the soldiers to the winch for nothing. We just had to keep silent while their commander took it out on us." DAY TWO September 19, 1986. The Governmental commission "throws" soldiers and military students into decontamination of the roof coating. Valeriy Starodumov trains and takes the first "couple" of soldiers to the zone of the highest contamination of more than 8000 Roentgen. After the successful experiment, the process "is launched as conveyor". Fragment of the monologue: "I will take a few hundred people through the zone. I will not know who they are, I will not see their faces behind protective masks and I will never know what is going to happen to them afterwards. It was not me who had made a decision to send these men to the zones of mortal danger, but each night some inexplicable feeling of guilt brings me back to the past. To that first two-minute shift, which has been continues for me for a quarter of century..." "...So, in the fall of 1986 3,828 people would pass through the roof coating of the Chernobyl power station. The heroes who saved the world вЂ" the newspapers would write in a pathetic manner. A few years later the heroes would no longer be remembered, and then they would be completely forgotten. That's really true: "life costs a penny". However, it is much more important for a person what he himself appreciates in this life, rather than for how much someone evaluated it..."

Collecting a spent nuclear fuel fragment at Chernobyl

06:31
**Please watch in HD format for best results** The area surrounding the incomplete natural-draft cooling towers at ChNPP's Unit 5 construction site is littered with local hot spots that are easy to find with a scintillation detector. In this video, I dig up one of these hot spots, and learn that the object responsible for the prominent radiation is a hard black fleck a mere 0.5 mm on a side. What is it? I collected the specimen and brought it back to the Interinform hotel for further explorations. The CDV-700 Geiger probe measures 35-40,000 cpm on contact with the beta window closed, translating into about 60 milliroentgen / hr and an activity of about 40 microcuries by comparison with other, known Cs-137 sources. Next I illustrate a rudimentary form of scintillation gamma spectrometry making use of my netbook's sound card and a clever piece of free pulse analysis software called PRA, written by Australian physicist Marek Dolleiser. This spectrometer arrangement works on the AC-coupled linear scintillation pulses from the Ludlum 12 preamp, and displays a pulse-height spectrum that conclusively identifies the medium-lived fission product Cs-137 as the nuclide responsible for all the gamma radiation from this particle. No surprise. About the only reasonable assumption based on the high activity (~20 mCi / g) is that this particle is a fragment of spent fuel that was ejected from Unit 4 at the time of the accident there. In color and appearance it is consistent with sintered uranium dioxide fuel, and the activity is broadly consistent as my calculation at the end of the video shows.

Disaster At Chernobyl.

46:41
The Chernobyl disaster was a nuclear accident that occurred on 26 April 1986 at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in Ukraine (officially Ukrainian SSR), which was under the direct jurisdiction of the central Moscow's authorities. An explosion and fire released large quantities of radioactive contamination into the atmosphere, which spread over much of Western USSR and Europe. It is considered the worst nuclear power plant accident in history atleast until Fukushima, and is one of only three classified as a level 7 event on the International Nuclear Event Scale (the other being the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster). The battle to contain the contamination and avert a greater catastrophe ultimately involved over 500,000 workers and cost an estimated 18 billion rubles, crippling the Soviet economy. The disaster began during a systems test on Saturday, 26 April 1986 at reactor number four of the Chernobyl plant, which is near the city of Prypiat and within a close proximity to the administrative border with Belarus and Dnieper river. There was a sudden power output surge, and when an emergency shutdown was attempted, a more extreme spike in power output occurred, which led to a reactor vessel rupture and a series of explosions. These events exposed the graphite moderator of the reactor to air, causing it to ignite. The resulting fire sent a plume of highly radioactive smoke fallout into the atmosphere and over an extensive geographical area, including Pripyat. The plume drifted over large parts of the western Soviet Union and Europe. From 1986 to 2000, 350,400 people were evacuated and resettled from the most severely contaminated areas of Belarus, Russia, and Ukraine. According to official post-Soviet data, about 60% of the fallout landed in Belarus. The accident raised concerns about the safety of the Soviet nuclear power industry, as well as nuclear power in general, slowing its expansion for a number of years and forcing the Soviet government to become less secretive about its procedures. The government coverup of the Chernobyl disaster was a "catalyst" for glasnost, which "paved the way for reforms leading to the Soviet collapse." Russia, Ukraine, and Belarus have been burdened with the continuing and substantial decontamination and health care costs of the Chernobyl accident. A report of the International Atomic Energy Agency, examines the environmental consequences of the accident. Estimates of the number of deaths potentially resulting from the accident vary enormously: Thirty one deaths are directly attributed to the accident, all among the reactor staff and emergency workers. A UNSCEAR report places the total confirmed deaths from radiation at 64 as of 2008. The World Health Organization (WHO) suggests it could reach 4,000 civilian deaths, a figure which does not include military clean-up worker casualties. A 2006 report predicted 30,000 to 60,000 cancer deaths as a result of Chernobyl fallout. A Greenpeace report puts this figure at 200,000 or more. A Russian publication, Chernobyl, concludes that 985,000 premature cancer deaths occurred worldwide between 1986 and 2004 as a result of radioactive contamination from Chernobyl.
