The Potosi Mine: Going Deep Inside Nevada's Oldest Lode Mine
We hiked up to the Potosi Mine to check out Nevada's oldest lode mine. The Potosi Mine was discovered in the mid-1800s and was owned by various companies until about 1930. The mine was mainly a silver mine, but other minerals were also mined there including zinc. We explored nearly all of this extensive, six-level abandoned mine.

Winnemucca Petroglyphs | Were The Oldest Rock Carvings in America Created by Giants?
In June 2018 Hugh Newman and Jj Ainsworth investigated America's oldest petroglyphs near Winnemucca Lake in Nevada and were astonished by the size of them, the deep carvings and complexity of what they saw, and how similar they are to ancient rock art in Ireland and other areas of the ancient world. They are located in the vicinity of legendary red-haired giants and could well have been carved by these prehistoric titans. Researchers at the University of Colorado, Boulder conducted a study that dated the rock carvings to between 10,500 and 14,800 years ago. Larry Benson found that the rocky outcrop was exposed at both these times from the water in the lake so the giant petroglyphs could have been carved during either of these periods. The carvings include the earliest example of 'cup marks' that are also found at Gobekli Tepe in Turkey (9,600 BC). Hugh also discovered something remarkable on the nearby dry lake bed, a huge geoglyph of spiralling circles, that has never before been reported. Copyright Megalithomania 2018/2019. Exploring the Old Dutch Cleanser Mine
Hidden in the Mojave Desert high on a 700-foot cliff in the El Paso Mountains is a large deposit of pumicite. In 1923 the Cudahy Packing Company began mining this ore to make Old Dutch Cleanser scouring powder which was similar to modern Comet cleansing powder. Old Dutch Cleanser powder is no longer manufactured, and the mine ceased operation in 1947. This is an exploration of the Old Dutch Cleanser Mine's interior as well as the exterior.
Exploring Abandoned Nevada: Schoolbus Canyon and MGL Mine, Nevada
Be sure to plan your route to burning man carefully, you could end up broke down in the middle of nowhere, Nevada. We took a day trip to Schoolbus Canyon, Nevada near Winnemucca Dry Lake. This is a suitable trip for any SUF with decent tires and clearance. More info here: https://wp.me/p1CTh9-H2 #allterrainfamily #Nevada #Overlanding NOTE: I mistyped the date in the intro, we did this on JANUARY 2, 2018. Winnemucca Dry Lake is a large playa on the side of NV-447 on the way to Gerlach Nevada, The Black Rock Playa and Burningman. Most travelers stick to the black top, but if you have a 4 wheel drive you should cut out across the flats and explore the derelict artifacts so common to central nevada. MGL Mine is an abandoned mine that is easy to find on the Eastern flanks of the Nightengale Mountains between Nixon, Nevada and Gerlach Nevada. If you proceed on the dirt road from MGL Mine you'll come to a canyon where the road climbs up to a place where two yellow school busses are abandoned in the desert. You can take photos, climb in the busses and even enjoy punching holes in the sheet metal with whatever weapon you happen to have handy, like a bowling ball trebuchet... This is a short drive from Reno Nevada taking no more than 2 hours.

Josie Pearl, Queen of the Black Rock Desert
Welcome to Wonderhussy Adventure #271 I've had two people email me about Josie Pearl -- so I finally got around to driving waaaaay up into the mountains of northern Nevada to check out the abandoned homestead of this pioneering female prospector! Josie was born in 1873, and spent her entire life prospecting, mining, or cooking for miners in various boardinghouses around the West. After her husband died of influenza, she lived alone in this remote, desolate cabin for 30 years -- well into her 80s! By all accounts, she was a wonderful person -- though she never had children of her own, she spent her summers hosting troubled young boys at her homestead, helping straighten them out and turn their lives around. Josie Pearl died in 1962, but she is not forgotten. Her homestead still stands...although it is sadly in a pretty bad state of disrepair. If I had the money, I'd hire a crew to go up there and fix it up, and turn it into one of the best volunteer cabins in the West! But in the meantime...the only tribute I can pay is this video. R.I.P. Ms.Josie Pearl...you were one awesome lady! Thank you to J.E. and Morgamo for the suggestion, and to Morgamo for helping with the gas money to get there. Tom Swift Lode Gold Mine
Tom Swift Mine, is a 20.66 acre unpatented lode claim located in the Slumbering Hills region of Humboldt County, Nevada. The claim is situated approximately 26 miles northwest of the city of Winnemucca, NV in the Awakening District. The district is notable for the famous gold strike at the nearby Jumbo Mine in 1935. The mine features an adit over 1500 feet in length that crosscuts through several quartz veins. Seen in the video is a view of the landscape and a journey inside of the mine documenting a few of the quartz veins along the way. Being that this mine has been developed but not worked, the veins are mostly untouched and ready for future mining. Please visit the Iron Miners site at www.ironminers.com for other mines in the area and to view mining history across the country.

After being forced into a Winnemucca hotel by snow, we continued on north toward the ghost town of Paradise Valley, stopping at Paradise Valley hot springs on the way. This unpretentious little spring was the PERFECT temperature for a winter soak -- once we drained the lukewarm water out of the tub and re-filled it from the hose coming out of the hot creek. Nevada's Forgotten Mining History: Nelson Ghost Town
While there might be more than a few ghost towns in Nevada, Nelson has a history that trumps them all. Known as the first major find in Nevada in its prime the mines in this area were pumping out millions of dollars in Gold and Silver. It is said that gold still abounds in the Techatticup Mine just beyond the touch of safety thus never to be harvested. We explored the Ghost Town which has been preserved, the many vehicles which tell the story of time passing and then made our way to the Jubilee Mine where we did a little self discovery mission into the crags of the graffiti ridden tunnels. Searching for the Abandoned Golden Eagle Mine
I recently spent an overcast, misty afternoon looking for the abandoned Golden Eagle Mine from which silver and gold were mined. I started by hiking down an old mining road that hadn't seen traffic of any kind in many years. Once down in the ravine, I found the eroded site of the Golden Eagle Mine after about 15 minutes of searching and then continued following the old road to two clearings. While poking around in the brush near the mine, I found some interesting artifacts, too. #ExploringAbandonedMines #AbandonedMines #MineExploring #UndergroundExploration
