SCAN2FX TUTORIAL: Intro - How to texture a mesh with SCAN2FX Texture

SCAN2FX Texture offers advanced texturing options to generate specific masks for each scan (e.g. scan bottoms, distance from scanner, or occluded areas) that can be utilized to fix up or otherwise modify textures with 3rd party paint software. SCAN2FX Texture also offers the ability to highlight occluded areas where no scan image data was available with a specific color to more easily paint in additional texture detail later on. SCAN2FX Texture can generate textures at varying resolutions and can generate edge padding if required to avoid edge artifacts. SCAN2FX Texture generates an overall texture automatically, but can also generate extra texture layers with the projection from each scan separately to help paint in areas from a particular scan where desired. SCAN2FX Texture is an add-on application for FARO SCENE and requires FARO SCENE 7.0 or higher. SCAN2FX Texture will utilize the full panorama images allowing to texture meshes even where no 3D point cloud was captured (backgrounds, windows, water, etc.). Features: - Automatically texture an OBJ mesh previously generated (requires UV layout). - Choose to apply color by proximity alone (for faster computations) or by considering occlusion (for more accurate textures). - Automatically color-highlight occluded areas in the texture based on the mesh to later paint in those areas for easy paint in later. - Compute contribution layers to fill in the contribution of a scan where needed or blend different layers in paint software. - Create optional masks to identify the missing “bottom,” the occluded areas, or the approximate distance from the scanner to a particular pixel for each scan. - Make a color adjustment to re-balance scans to better match the color of a specific scan if desired e.g. to compensate for exposure or time of day differences. - 3D color balance for smoother transition based on mesh structure. The standard SCAN2FX Texture module by itself will only output textured OBJ meshes and, depending on the settings, extra image layers and/or mask images. With the additional SCAN2FX Exporter (for Mari) module, SCAN2FX Texture obtains the additional capability to generate a Mari PY file with a full Mari setup that loads the resulting mesh, an overall layer, and contributing layers for each scan. Masks can be loaded from disk if required. Likewise, with the additional SCAN2FX Exporter (for Maya) module, SCAN2FX Texture obtains the additional capability to generate a Maya file with a full Maya setup that loads the resulting mesh with texture, an overall shader, and individual shaders for each scan layer with the selected mask types (e.g. scan bottom, occluded area, or distance from scanner). In today's video, we're going to talk about using Vray proxies to speed up your rendering models. Basically, a proxy is a replacement within your model that is used to take the place of a high polygon model. This can be especially useful because SketchUp doesn't always handle very high polygon models very well. However, that being said, usually the most realistic models for rendering are also high polygon, so we can use proxies to bring those items into our renderings without having to bring them into SketchUp. Vray allows you to export your object as a proxy file, will import as a normal mesh at render time only. Let’s say, for example, that we want to render these 3 trees (trees are from Skatter’s model library). They’re very detailed, and contain a LOT of geometry. If you look at the model size for just these 3 trees, it’s over 61 MB. If we were to add a lot of these trees, our SketchUp model would quickly become unusable from just the amount of geometry in the trees. I do want to note that Skatter also has some built-in tools for creating render only models that we’ll discuss in a future video. However, in this case, I want to focus specifically on Vray Proxies. What I want to do is export each one of these trees to a render proxy model (or a VRMesh file). That way, when we create our render, Vray can reference these models, but without all of the geometry being in our actual model. When we click the create Vray proxy button, we’re going to be given a series of options. These will affect the size of the object that’s left in your model once you export your proxy. Basically, they allow you to pick how realistic the proxy that’s left is. You basically are given 3 options for how the proxy is created. Face Skipping – This is the fastest and lightest weight proxy you can create. It will simply display random faces from your original mesh. Vertex Clustering – This method uses a grid to reduce the amount of geometry in your proxy model. It doesn’t necessarily keep all the fine details, but creates a decent approximation of your object. Refined Clustering – This is a two step process within Vray – it uses vertex clustering to start your proxy creation, then finishes your proxy off with an algorithm. This creates the most detailed proxies, but also the slowest. You can also adjust the number of number of faces created in your proxy using the proxy slider. Overwrite existing files allows you to save over any mesh file that might exist in your model in the location you’re trying to save. Replace object with proxy will swap out your selected geometry with your proxy. Otherwise, this will create your Vrmesh, but it won’t remove the base geometry from your model. You can adjust the way that your proxies preview in your Vray asset editor – there are options for Proxy Preview - Shows your proxies exactly as you created them Whole Mesh – Displays the original object geometry within your model. Note that this can be very slow Bounding Box – this creates a box within the boundary of the object group – it’s basically good for showing the location of your proxies without showing your details Point (Origin) – shows basically 4 points at the boundary of your proxy, as well as the proxy origin point of the axes Custom Preview – theoretically the idea behind this one is to allow you to change the proxy file without updating the preview geometry Note that you can also import proxy objects into your models in much the same way that you can import components, allowing you to create a library of objects that you can import later. However, you’re also going to need to export your materials for import into your object in the future. I’m going to cover this in my next video.

I used spPaint3d script in Maya to paint the hair planes quickly. Of course for best result need some manual fine touch. Other important things: You should check the brush geometry: set pivot and freeze transformation. If you choose the "place" paint option you can rotate the mesh with SHIFT key. In the options menu you can set the "Place rotate increment" value to determine the rotate angle. You can increase the random painting by set the rotate and scale attribute range. 27 - Maya 2015 - High Poly to Low Poly Projection

We can transfer our high poly detail over to our low poly game object using Transfer Maps within Maya’s lighting and shading render menu. A projection will need to have the low poly object selected as the target mesh. The target mesh is the object that will be receiving all the detail from the source object. The source object will be our high poly object. We will need to assign both the target and source objects and then set up the envelope so that everything we want to capture is inside of it. We can capture more than just the bump detail of our high polygon object. A projection can be used to capture several different aspects of our high poly object such as the color texture information and even create occlusion mapping. The great thing about the ability to capture the color information is that the high poly texture information will be moved to the proper location on the UV map of the game object. This allows us to have more freedom when developing our texture on the high poly object. Running a projection can be a time consuming process. For this reason it is recommended to always use the Bake and Close option after setting up the projection. This way you can walk away from your computer while the projection is being run and at a glance of your monitor you can tell if it is complete. When the projection is finished the Transfer Maps window will no longer be open. Once the window is closed you will quickly know that you can come back and get back to work on your model.
