ch 16) A Peoples War

01:45:41
chapter 16: A People's History (Of The United States) Howard Zinn. ~ Chapter 16, "A People's War?", covers World War II, opposition to it, and the effects of the war on the people. Zinn, a veteran of the war himself, notes that "it was the most popular war the US ever fought," [p104] but states that this support may have been manufactured through the institutions of American society. He cites various instances of opposition to fighting (in some cases greater than those during World War I) as proof. Zinn also argues that the US's true intention was not fighting against systematic racism, since the US had this itself, such as with the Jim Crow laws (leading to opposition to the war from African-Americans). Another argument made by Zinn is that the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki were not necessary, as the U.S. government had already known that the Japanese were considering surrender beforehand. Other subjects from WWII covered include Japanese American internment and the bombing of Dresden. The chapter continues into the Cold War, which Zinn writes was used by the U.S. government to increase control over the American people (for instance, eliminating such radical elements as the Communist Party) and at the same time create a state of permanent war, which allowed for the creation of the military-industrial complex. Zinn believes this was possible because both conservatives and liberals willingly worked together in the name of anti-Communism. Also covered is US involvement in the Greek Civil War, the Korean War, Julius and Ethel Rosenberg, and the Marshall Plan.

H. LAWRENCE (1885 - 1930) Briefly appearing in 1915, then banned and taken out of circulation for its adult treatment of sexuality, Lawrence's visionary novel The Rainbow attempts to situate the lives of three generations of the Brangwen family within the continuous social change marking the Victorian transformation of Britain. Farmer Tom and his Polish wife Lydia, whose peaceful rural existence re-enacts the potent myths of Genesis; artisan Will and the matriarch Anna, who go to live among the industrial and mining communities so rapidly sprung up around Nottingham; finally the restless Ursula who, moving to the city, seeks sexual and emotional fulfilment with the Polish-descended Skrebensky - the three couples are not merely illustrative of the changing times, but allow the author to study in depth the conflict between the outer 'social' selves of those individuals and what he curiously calls the 'inhuman' essential being, the 'is-ness' at the core of their psychical life. Lawrence evokes this dark, unconscious 'vital core' through a language of breathtaking poetic beauty; a rhythmic incantatory prose which listeners to this recording will find perfectly rendered by Tony Foster, in all its nuances. Like Paul Morel, the hero of the earlier Sons and Lovers, Ursula survives her losses to face a future of uncertain but radiant hope: "She saw in the rainbow the earth's new architecture, the old, brittle corruption of houses and factories swept away, the world built up in a living fabric of Truth, fitting to the over-arching heaven." FRITZ HABER - Documentary

32:03
Fritz Haber was a German chemist who received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1918 for his invention of the Haber–Bosch process, a method used in industry to synthesize ammonia from nitrogen gas and hydrogen gas. This invention is of importance for the large-scale synthesis of fertilizers and explosives. The food production for half the world's current population depends on this method for producing nitrogen fertilizers. Haber, along with Max Born, proposed the Born–Haber cycle as a method for evaluating the lattice energy of an ionic solid. Haber is also considered the "father of chemical warfare" for his years of pioneering work developing and weaponizing chlorine and other poisonous gases during World War I, especially his actions during the Second Battle of Ypres.... http://www.wikividi.com ____________________________________ Shortcuts to chapters: 00:01:10: Early life and education 00:06:25: Early career 00:11:30: Nobel Prize 00:14:57: World War I 00:18:23: Personal life and family 00:22:17: Between World Wars 00:25:19: Death 00:27:16: Estate and legacy ____________________________________ Copyright WikiVidi. Montage of close up shots of the Kowalskis walking, arriving to Persia and walking in their brigades. Amendment July 2016: A visitor to the site has informed us about the following history of Polish refugees in Persia: Thousands of Poles were deported to the USSR in 1940-1, after the Red Army invaded Poland. Following the outbreak of the Soviet-German war in June 1941, talks began between Stalin and the Polish government in exile. These concluded with the signing of the Sikorski-Mayski agreement (30 July 1941). In August 1941, Soviet authorities issued an “amnesty” decree for Polish citizens. The Polish-Soviet agreement enabled the Polish Embassy to resume operations, and gave Polish people an opportunity to leave their places of exile. Moreover, it created a legal basis for the formation of the Polish Army in the USSR, under the command of Gen. Wladyslaw Anders (hence the name Anders’ Army). The army was a component of the Polish Armed Forces, subordinate to the government in London. The Polish Army (app. 76,000 people) was evacuated to Iran in 1942, along with around 40,000 Polish civilians. It was then that settlements were created for the civilians in Africa, Iran, India, Palestine, Mexico and New Zealand. FILM ID:1073.02 A VIDEO FROM BRITISH PATHÉ. Power’s War - Wild West Forgotten History Documentary | Narrated by Mad Men’s John Slattery

01:04:25
On the evening of February 9th, 1918 three local lawmen and one federal officer rode into the Arizona wilderness to apprehend four men. The events that followed has been so steeped in legend, lies, and hearsay, that the facts of what occurred at that remote cabin and why were almost lost to history. Grand Jury Prize Winner of the 2015 Anthem Film Festival, Best Documentary Film: 2015 Jerome 89A Film and Music Festival, Logan Utah Film Festival. 2016 Best of the West Documentary Film for TrueWest Magazine. 2016 Gold Spur Award from the Western Writers of America. This shootout did not take place on the streets of Tombstone during its wild territorial days, but rather in a remote canyon of the Galiuro Mountains on a snowy Sunday morning in 1918. Close examination at the extant documents of the case following the shootout reveal that this was an opening salvo in a much more modern battle which pitted the rights of individuals against the power of the federal government. Power’s War tells the story of the dawn of the American surveillance age and the affect it had on the Power Family as they chased the disappearing wild frontier. Their silent protest against the war led to a skirmish that was soon followed by the largest manhunt and longest prison sentence served in the state of Arizona Directed by Cameron Trejo.

The Disappearing Spoon: True Tales of Madness, Love, and World History from the Periodic Table

48:18
Sam Kean, Author Why did Gandhi hate iodine (I, 53)? Why did the Japanese kill Godzilla with missiles made of cadmium (Cd, 48)? How did radium (Ra, 88) nearly ruin Marie Curie's reputation? And why did tellurium (Te, 52) lead to the most bizarre gold rush in history? The periodic table is one of our crowning scientific achievements, but it's also a treasure trove of passion, adventure, betrayal, and obsession. The fascinating tales in Sam Kean's The Disappearing Spoon follow carbon, neon, silicon, gold, and every single element on the table as they play out their parts in human history, finance, mythology, conflict, the arts, medicine, and the lives of the (frequently) mad scientists who discovered them. In weaving this tale of the Periodic Table, Sam Kean fuses science with the classic lore of invention, investigation, discovery, and alchemy, from the Big Bang through the end of time.

"What is a Refugee Crisis?" March 11, 2016 Cogut Center for the Humanities, Brown University This year, events in the Middle East, Africa and Europe have led to popular movements that have been described as the largest refugee crisis since WWII. What is Fascism? | Definition of Fascism | Fascism Explained

01:19:39
Fascism is a form of radical authoritarian nationalism, characterized by dictatorial power, forcible suppression of opposition and control of industry and commerce that came to prominence in early 20th-century Europe. The first fascist movements emerged in Italy during World War I before it spread to other European countries. Opposed to liberalism, Marxism and anarchism, fascism is usually placed on the far-right within the traditional left–right spectrum. ………………………………………………………………………………….. Mustafa - Can Dündar 2008

01:50:18

This is an audio version of the Wikipedia Article: Vladimir Lenin Listening is a more natural way of learning, when compared to reading. Written language only began at around 3200 BC, but spoken language has existed long ago. Learning by listening is a great way to: - increases imagination and understanding - improves your listening skills - improves your own spoken accent - learn while on the move - reduce eye strain Now learn the vast amount of general knowledge available on Wikipedia through audio (audio article). You could even learn subconsciously by playing the audio while you are sleeping! If you are planning to listen a lot, you could try using a bone conduction headphone, or a standard speaker instead of an earphone. He served as head of government of Soviet Russia from 1917 to 1924 and of the Soviet Union from 1922 to 1924. Under his administration, Russia and then the wider Soviet Union became a one-party communist state governed by the Russian Communist Party. Ideologically a Marxist, he developed political theories known as Leninism. Born to a wealthy middle-class family in Simbirsk, Lenin embraced revolutionary socialist politics following his brother's 1887 execution. Expelled from Kazan Imperial University for participating in protests against the Russian Empire's Tsarist government, he devoted the following years to a law degree. He moved to Saint Petersburg in 1893 and became a senior Marxist activist. In 1897, he was arrested for sedition and exiled to Shushenskoye for three years, where he married Nadezhda Krupskaya. After his exile, he moved to Western Europe, where he became a prominent theorist in the Marxist Russian Social Democratic Labour Party (RSDLP). In 1903, he took a key role in a RSDLP ideological split, leading the Bolshevik faction against Julius Martov's Mensheviks. Encouraging insurrection during Russia's failed Revolution of 1905, he later campaigned for the First World War to be transformed into a Europe-wide proletarian revolution, which as a Marxist he believed would cause the overthrow of capitalism and its replacement with socialism. After the 1917 February Revolution ousted the Tsar and established a Provisional Government, he returned to Russia to play a leading role in the October Revolution, in which the Bolsheviks overthrew the new regime. Lenin's Bolshevik government initially shared power with the Left Socialist Revolutionaries, elected soviets, and a multi-party Constituent Assembly, although by 1918 it had centralised power in the new Communist Party. Lenin's administration redistributed land among the peasantry and nationalised banks and large-scale industry. It withdrew from the First World War by signing a treaty with the Central Powers and promoted world revolution through the Communist International. Opponents were suppressed in the Red Terror, a violent campaign administered by the state security services; tens of thousands were killed or interned in concentration camps. His administration defeated right and left-wing anti-Bolshevik armies in the Russian Civil War from 1917 to 1922 and oversaw the Polish–Soviet War of 1919–1921. Responding to wartime devastation, famine, and popular uprisings, in 1921 Lenin encouraged economic growth through the market-oriented New Economic Policy. Several non-Russian nations secured independence after 1917, but three re-united with Russia through the formation of the Soviet Union in 1922. In increasingly poor health, Lenin died at his dacha in Gorki, with Joseph Stalin succeeding him as the pre-eminent figure in the Soviet government. Widely considered one of the most significant and influential figures of the 20th century, Lenin was the posthumous subject of a pervasive personality cult within the Soviet Union until its dissolution in 1991. He became an ideological figurehead behind Marxism–Leninism and thus a prominent influence over the international communist movement. A controversial and highly divisive individual, Lenin is viewed by supporters as a champion of socialism and the working class, while critics on both the left and right emphasize his role as founder and leader of an authoritarian regime responsible for political repression and mass killings.

The Armenian Genocide: 100 Years of Denial

01:45:12
There is a false truism that denial is the final stage of genocide. Denial is usually present in every stage of a genocide and even part of the process before the active phase of the genocide begins. The final stage of a genocide is, actually, “consolidation,” that is, the process by which the harms of genocide inflicted on the victim population and the great benefits accruing to the perpetrators become permanent and irremediable. This can occur when a victim group fades out of existence completely or when the post-genocide status quo becomes so normalized that no reparative change is ever possible again. Denial is a sign that the history of the genocide has yet to be written and repair can occur. Drawing on general theoretical elements as well as features of other cases, this talk will explore the ongoing attempt at consolidation of the 1915 Armenian Genocide by the present-day Turkish government and the importance of reparative justice in thwarting this trend. Dr. Theriault earned his PhD in philosophy in 1999 from the University of Massachusetts, with a specialization in social and political philosophy. He is currently professor of philosophy at Worcester State College, where he has taught since 1998. From 1999 to 2007, he served as coordinator of the College’s Center for the Study of Human Rights, which included oversight of development of the Dennis Brutus Manuscript Collection. Since 2007, he has served as co-editor-in-chief of the peer-reviewed journal Genocide Studies and Prevention and has been on the Advisory Council of the International Association of Genocide Scholars. His research focuses on philosophical approaches to genocide issues, especially genocide denial and critical thinking and evidence standards, long-term justice, ethical analyses of perpetrator motivations, and the role of violence against women in genocide. Sponsored by the Hon. Scott Avedisian, Mayor of Warwick, RI, Haiganush Bedrosian, Chief Judge of the Rhode Island Family Court, the Armenian Cultural Association of Rhode Island and the Watson Institute.

UAF - 2015 - The Lost Alaskans

01:35:29
Retired Superior Court Judge Niesje Steinkruger highlights ongoing work to document the histories of Alaskans sent to Morningside Hospital through court records and other archived materials. Steinkruger has spent five years as a volunteer for the Morningside Project. Thousands of Alaskans were sent to Morningside between 1904 and the early 1960s because there were no facilities here to treat the mentally handicapped and those suffering other disabilities. After the hospital closed, many of these people were never heard from again. The hospital building burned and all records were lost. From UAF Summer Sessions and Lifelong Learning

The mechanism of the Maxim gun employed one of the earliest recoil-operated firing systems in history. The idea is that the energy from recoil acting on the breech block is used to eject each spent cartridge and insert the next one, instead of a hand-operated mechanism. Maxim's earliest designs used a 360-degree rotating cam to reverse the movement of the block, but this was later simplified to a toggle lock. This made it vastly more efficient and less labor-intensive than previous rapid-firing guns, such as the Mitrailleuse, Gatling, Gardner, or Nordenfelt, that relied on actual mechanical cranking. The Maxim gun design was provided with water cooling, giving it the ability to maintain its rate of fire for far longer than air-cooled guns. The disadvantage of this was that it made the gun less flexible in attack than the lighter air-cooled weapons, being heavier and more complex, and requiring a supply of water. Trials demonstrated that the Maxim could fire 600 rounds per minute.[3] Compared to modern machine guns, the Maxim was heavy, bulky, and awkward. A lone soldier could fire the weapon, but it was usually operated by a team of men, usually 4 to 6. Apart from the gunner, other crew were needed to speed reload, spot targets, and carry and ready ammunition and water. Several men were needed to move or mount the heavy weapon. The United States Army had shown interest in the Maxim machine gun since 1887. Model 1889 and Model 1900 Maxims were used for testing, which lasted for years but not continuously. The gun was finally adopted in 1904 as the Maxim Machine Gun, Caliber .30, Model of 1904 as the first rifle-caliber heavy machine gun for standard service in the U.S. Army. The first 50 guns and tripods were made by Vickers, Sons & Maxim in the U.K. chambered for .30-03. Colt's Manufacturing Company was selected to produce it domestically, but challenges with schematics and specifications delayed its introduction. By the time Colt began production in 1908 (which was also the last year orders were placed for the guns), a total of 90 M1904s were made by Vickers. Colt made their machine guns for the new .30-06 caliber, and the ones made by Vickers were re-chambered for the new round. A total of 287 M1904 Maxims were manufactured. The U.S. procured other machine guns after M1904 production ended, including the M1909 Benét–Mercié, the Colt–Vickers M1915, and the Browning M1917. M1904 Maxims were issued to infantry companies and cavalry. Each company had four guns with associated tripods, ammunition, and 20 mules to transport the heavy guns. The M1904 was deployed in operations in the Philippines, Hawaii, Mexico, and Central and South America, but never saw much combat use. During World War I, it remained in the U.S. for training easy red dead redemption 2 money glitch here! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=10F-xk10kVc RDR2 GOLD BARS MONEY MONEY GLITCH HERE ►https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a1YuDK4fbIo ⛔ *Disclaimer*⛔ ➔ "Copyright Disclaimer Under Section 107 of the Copyright Act 1976, allowance is made for "fair use" for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, and research.
