Tantalum is a shiny, silvery metal which is soft when is pure. It is almost immune to chemical attack at temperatures below 150 C. Tantalum is virtually resistant to corrosion due to an oxide film on its surface. Tantalum was discovered by Anders Gustaf Ekenberg, a Swedish chemist, in 1802 in minerals obtained from Ytterby, Sweden. Many scientists believed that he had only discovered an allotrope of niobium, an element that is chemically similar to tantalum. Atomic Number 73 Atomic Mass 180.948 Melting Point 3017°C, 5463°F, 3290 K Boiling Point 5455°C, 9851°F, 5728 K Group 5;Period 6;Block d Tantalum is rarely found uncombined in nature. It occurs mainly in the mineral columbite-tantalite, which also contains other metals including niobium. It is mined in many places including Australia, Canada and Brazil. There are several complicated steps involved in separating the tantalum from the niobium. A lot of tantalum is obtained commercially as a by-product of tin extraction. One of the main uses of tantalum is in the production of electronic components. An oxide layer which forms on the surface of tantalum can act as an insulating layer. Because tantalum can be used to coat other metals with a very thin layer, a high capacitance can be achieved in a small volume. This makes tantalum capacitors attractive for portable electronics such as mobile phones. Tantalum causes no immune response in mammals, so has found wide use in the making of surgical implants. It can replace bone, for example in skull plates; as foil or wire it connects torn nerves; and as woven gauze it binds abdominal muscle. It is very resistant to corrosion and so is used in equipment for handling corrosive materials. It has also found uses as electrodes for neon lights, AC/DC rectifiers and in glass for special lenses. Tantalum alloys can be extremely strong and have been used for turbine blades, rocket nozzles and nose caps for supersonic aircraft.

ETHIOPIA

01:15
In addition to gold, Ethiopia has reserves of platinum, copper, potash, natural gas and hydropower. Further minerals found in Ethiopia includes gold, platinum, niobium, tantalum, nickel, cooper, chrome, manganese, limestone, sandstone, gypsum, clay, lignite, opal, oil shale, laterite iron ore, bentonite, clay, perlite, diatomite, potash, halite, and oil & gas. However, the mineral industry is not a significant sector of the economy, contributing a small percentage to the GDP. On a global scale, Ethiopia is a significant producer of tantalum, producing 7% of the world's supply in 2007. Ethiopia is calling upon the international community to bring in their expertise and skills to enhance this largely untapped mineral bowl.

The Curse of the coltan mines in Congo

52:01
Coltan is a metallic ore from which the very similar elements niobium, also known as columbium, and tantalum are extracted. Coltan mining specifically in the Democratic Republic of Congo has been associated with child labor & human rights violations. The coltan industry is worth billions of dollars a year. Prices for coltan ranged between $50 and $200 per pound in 2012[1]-and have spiked much higher in the past when supplies were scarce, when the Playstation 2 was first introduced. In 2006, Australia, Brazil, and Canada produced 80% of the world’s coltan,[2] but as of 2012, coltan’s main producers are Australia, Brazil, Canada, Mozambique, and once again include the Democratic Republic of Congo (via smuggling into Rwanda).[3] Additional coltan reserves have been found on every continent except Antarctica. For a variety of reasons, though, the task of supplying world coltan needs has fallen on conflict regions and underdeveloped countries. Coltan products are sold in private, unregulated markets,[4] unlike commodity metals like gold, copper, zinc, and tin. No standards are set or enforced for mining operations and devising safety procedures is the responsibility of mine operators may not prioritize worker well-being. In this RT documentary evils of modern day mining to meet the needs of our most advanced tech is there for all to see. Here in Lionsville we question everything and we have no sacred cows! Congo: Combating Illegal Coltan Mining | Global 3000

05:48
The Democratic Republic of Congo has rich deposits of gold, diamonds, copper and other minerals that unscrupulous business people have been eager to exploit. Rebel groups have used the sale of raw materials to fund civil war, and Rwandan militias in eastern Congo are capitalizing on the sale of coltan, a crucial raw material in the manufacture of electronic devices. Now, developed countries are stepping up pressure on industry to buy exclusively clean, or conflict-free, raw materials. The United Nations has suggested developing a certification scheme to stamp out the trade of dirty or illegally mined materials.

Production of Tantalum Beads by X-medics

04:58
X-medics is a specialized tantalum player with more than a decade of knowhow in the field of tantalum products and the manufacturing of tantalum beads. We are continually improving our business concept and today we can offer the leading product quality, the uppermost technical documentation and the shortest lead times available in the market. X-medics is situated in Copenhagen in the high-tech Medicon Valley region area connecting Denmark and Sweden. We supply customers globally in the Americas, Europe, Asia and Africa. X-medics is highly flexible and can handle orders ranging from only a few hundred beads to hundreds of thousands for shipping directly from stock to reach customers globally in a few days. X-medics’ customer base spans from small prototype workshops to large fabrication facilities and includes the majority of the world’s top-10 spinal implant manufactures. X-medics materials are today implanted in millions of patients. To illustrate how X-medics works, let’s take a look at the fabrication of tantalum beads. Tantalum beads, tantalum balls and tantalum spheres are synonyms for the same product. Surgical grade tantalum wire is used as raw material in the manufacturing of X-medics’ tantalum beads. As mandated by the Dodd-Frank law on conflict materials, X-medics evaluates the supply chain concerning conflict-free sourcing. We verify that the raw material supplier has undergone an independent evaluation by an auditor appointed by the Conflict-free sourcing program and that the smelter has a valid conflict free smelter identification number. The conflict free smelter ID and the delivery date of the wire can be found in the certificate that follows any shipment from X-medics. The tantalum wire is now sent for chemical and mechanical testing performed by an ISO accredited laboratory. The laboratory validates the wire against the ASTM and ISO material-standards and issues an independent 3rd party material testing certificate. This certificate is stored by X-medics and a copy is provided as an appendix in the certificate to the customer. If the trial results are acceptable, the wire will be approved for processing into tantalum beads. The beads are manufactured in a series of steps, ground and polished to a narrow tolerance of 5 micrometres or 0.2 micro inches equal to A.F.B.M.A. grade 50. After industrial cleaning and drying the beads undergo an intensive visual inspection by trained personnel. Balls with an uneven shape or with surface defects will be removed from the batch. The tolerance is subsequently tested independently of production by calibrated equipment under the X-medics medical device quality system. The beads are then sent to a specialized ISO certified medical device cleaning facility, where they undergo a validated cleaning and passivation procedure of more than 10 steps to fulfil the requirement of ASTM F86 for surgical implants. The parts are then returned to X-medics together with a cleaning certificate. After the cleaning, a batch sample will be sent to an independent ISO accredited laboratory in order to validate the surface purity of the beads. The laboratory conducts a cytotoxicity test for biocompatibility on the sample. This test reveals if potentially harmful particles or chemicals remain after processing. The laboratory then issues an independent test report with the result. If the 3rd party testing shows that the beads are of adequate purity, the batch will be released for packaging and shipping to our customers The internal and external test results as well as the conflict material information are consolidated in a test certificate provided to the customer together with a copy of the 3rd party material testing certificate and the cleaning ASTM F86 cleaning certificate. The total value of this comprehensive external documentation work adds up to thousands of dollars or euros. As X-medics shares the documentation with a large number of customers, the added cost to an individual order will only be a small fraction of the value. Total production and testing time for a batch of tantalum beads is typically 3-6 months. As X-medics delivers the tantalum beads from stock, customer orders can be handled in only a few hours. Please contact us to quote your next order of tantalum beads, rods or wire. Simply send your request by email to [email protected] More than 99% of our requests are responded to within 24 hours, 7 days a week. If X-medics’ quotation has not reached you the next day, please call us as your email might not have reached us. BOLIVIA: MINERS LAUNCH PROTEST AGAINST PLANS TO PRIVATISE TIN MINES

02:30
Natural Sound Bolivian miners and their families have launched a protest against government plans to privatise a lucrative tin mine. 25-hundred miners have occupied the Posokoni hill mine since Friday. Hundreds more have marched through the streets of Oruro, 260 kilometers (152 miles) from the capital, La Paz. Miners and their families chanted anti-government slogans through the streets of Oruro, Bolivia, on Saturday, demanding jobs at the lucrative Posokoni mine. The mine lies in the mineral rich Huanuni region which the government is planning to sell into foreign ownership. Wives and supporters donned helmets and took to the streets of the nearby town of Oruro in support of colleagues who have occupied the mine since Friday. Many criticised the government under President Gonzalo Sanchez de Lozada. An estimated 25-hundred miners staging the sit-in at Posokoni were unblocking shafts in order to gain access to the mineral deposits. Posokoni tin is rated among the best in the world and is therefore likely to attract much interest from foreign buyers. SOUNDBITE: (Spanish) "The present government is intending to give away our riches to different foreign companies, and we don't want that. What we want is that they give these riches to us so that we can work them." SUPERCAPTION: Eduardo Mollinedo, member of miners' cooperative Miners in Bolivia work in cooperatives which are allocated specific mining rights by the state. Many of these mines have been exhausted and can no longer sustain the livelihoods of those people who work them. Without profitable land to mine, many families would be left with nothing. SOUNDBITE: (Spanish) "There are about 2,500 of us occupying, so that they allocate areas to us here in this place, Posokoni hill, where we get the tin for our livelihood." SUPER CAPTION: Eduardo Mollinedo, member of miners' cooperative The demonstration comes at a fragile time for President Lozada. Bolivia enters a general election on Sunday and Lozada is seeking a further term as president. Many Bolivians do not support his privatisation plans and there is public sympathy for the miners. Some of those living close to Posokoni have offered miners, who've come to protest from other regions, a roof over their heads while the demonstration continues. Documentary U S Policy ETHIOPIA A FAILED STATE!

54:32
To our viewers that raised the concern of the Oromos, it was not and it is still not our intent to leave out the Oromo issues. In fact, we have been researching the Oromo issue along with the other ethnic groups. We are well aware that Oromos are a majority ethnic group within Ethiopian and that they have been prosecuted relentlessly by the current government. The mass incarceration of Oromo students and illegal land appropriations the government has been doing, particularly in 2014, is one aspect we have been researching. The committee for this documentary felt that it was prudent to have enough research and data analysis on the Oromo issue before it was included in the documentary. Therefore, it will be included in a second edition that we will release soon, so please bear with us and be patient.
